Advanced Theatrical Production

Course Description

Students explore a variety of ways to combine all the elements of theatre to create an effective full-length production. Students will develop an understanding of the role of the director and other theatre personnel in developing clearly defined interpretations and points of view, which are then implemented in effective performances and/or productions.

Week 1: Course Introduction

Topics: Monologues, Individual Events, Maryland State Thespian Festival

Weeks 2- 3: Auditions, Blocking and the Rehearsal Process

Topics: scene study and analysis, scene selection, and performance.

Weeks 4 – 12: Fall Show – Starmites! Performances: December 1-3, 2011

Topics: acting, rehearsals, performances

Weeks 13-17: - One Acts and Individual Events - rehearsal and production for the Maryland State Thespian Festival– Preparation and Performance: January 6th- 7th

Topics: Auditions, rehearsals, lighting, set design, make-up, props, costuming, promotion, technical and dress rehearsals, performances.

Week 18: Critique and Evaluation

Materials

Students must come to class everyday with; a 3-ring binder designated for ATP, pens, pencils, eraser, notebook dividers, and any assigned scenes/materials.

Scripts: Acting students will receive both a script and a chorus book for our Fall production of Starmites. Students will have to opportunity to purchase their scripts for $10. The chorus books for Starmites are rented and must be returned to the publishing company in good condition and without damage or the student will be charged a replacement fee of $10.

IMPORTANT: Students will be charged $10 each for any scripts/chorus books (unless purchased) that are lost and/or damaged. Scripts/chorus books for Starmites must be returned with all blocking and notes erased by Monday, December 5, 2011.

Students may be required to provide their own costumes for all productions

Grading Policy and Evaluation Techniques

All grades will be calculated using total points earned divided by total points possible.

All productions are required and attendance is mandatory after school during Load-In, Tech Week, and Performances. Failure to attend will SIGNIFICANTLY affect YOUR GRADE!

Course Requirements

Students in Advanced Theatrical Production will be required to:

1.  Keep a production folder, which will include notes, reflections, and production information.

2.  Participate in all productions as either an actor or technician.

3.  Students are required to attend after school rehearsals during load-in (10/15)

tech weeks (11/14-11/30) and performances (12/1-12/3). These rehearsals

and performances are a major percentage of your final exam and therefore

participation is mandatory.

4. Attend two outside productions as an audience member during the semester.

A written critique and playbill is required for credit.

Classroom Expectations

ATP is an advanced course. It is recognized, however, that each student brings with him or her unique strengths and challenges. All students are expected to work at a high level of commitment and quality, putting forth their best effort in each assignment, whether it be an assignment of challenge or ease. Evaluation will be based on improvement, enthusiasm, and effort, as well as performance. It is expected that students will complete all assignments and attempt all classroom activities. A positive attitude and daily effort will ensure satisfaction for both the student and class as a whole. Failure to complete the course requirements will significantly affect a student’s grade.
