Course Description:

Advanced Orchestra Full Year

Open to all students approved by the director.Three to four of previous playing experience is recommended. Instruction focuses on the preparation of a variety of music for public concerts, adjudication festivals and other events. The level of instruction is geared to the development of necessary technique and musical skills needed to onward into high school. Students are required to participate in all performances by the group. Participation also includes a required weekly sectional.Students are provided the opportunity to participate in the All-City Honor Orchestra and the District 4 Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Course Content:

Students are required to participate in several performances throughout the year. Performances will require students to successfullymeet the standards for the Salem-Keizer Advanced Orchestras, with regard to: quality of sound, technique, and musicality. The literature coursework is designed to set the foundation for meeting these criteria.

Course Grading:

Attendanceand participation, written work, and performance testing are the core of a student’s grade.A performance is a test that cannot be made up. If a student must miss a concert, please notify Mr. Purdy by 8:30 a.m. the day of the concert, for theabsence to be considered excused. A student unexcused from a concert will receive no higher than a “C” for the grading period.

Make-up Work:

Make-up work (opportunity provided for excused absence) is due within 1 week after the due date of the given assignment. Exception: all make-up work has to be completed by the end of a grading period.

  2. Students will demonstrate patience and understanding with each other’s learning curve.

Negative Behavior

  1. Warning and parents contacted
  2. Referral, drop in citizenship grade, 2 week probation, parents notified.
  3. Student moved to a more appropriate class if terms of probation aren’t met.

Tardy Policy

  1. In chair with music and instrument when tardy bell rings.
  2. No music – Not ready to Learn
  3. No instrument –Not ready to Learn
  4. No Pencil-Not ready to Learn
  5. 1 tardy will eliminate your opportunity to attend the 90% attendance/100% No Tardy party.
  6. 1st Tardy/Not ready to Learn – student /teacher discussion
  7. 2nd Tardy/Not ready to Learn – student/teacher/parent discussion
  8. 3rd Tardy/Not ready to Learn – Referral
