Course Title: Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing

Course Description: This course continues with discussion of disorders, diseases, and the care of clients with endocrine, gastrointestinal, urinary, neurological, integumentary, sensory, immune, and musculoskeletal problems. This course instructs the student in their role in advanced nursing skills and nursing care in complex situations. Supervised clinical experience in medical-surgical nursing and care of clients with a variety of diseases and disorders will be provided.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the student will with a minimum of 80% accuracy on written quizzes, exams, and assignments be able to

1.Describe pathophysiology for medical-surgical conditions of selected body

systems.

2.Explain signs & symptoms for medical-surgical conditions of selected body

systems.

3.Discuss diagnostic testing procedures for medical-surgical conditions of

selected body systems.

4.Describe nursing responsibilities for medical-surgical conditions of selected body

systems.

5.Incorporate nursing interventions that promote maintenance of normal body

structure and function, for clients during various life cycles.

6.Identify deviations from normal structure and function of selected body systems.

7.Report deviations from normal body structure and function in a timely manner to

the appropriate member of the health care team.

8.Continue to utilize Maslow’s Hierarchy and Erikson to prioritize assessment finds

of the total client.

9.Perform advanced nursing skills in caring for acutely ill clients in complex nursing

situations.

10.Continue to involve the client and family in total client care.

11.Demonstrate initiative in utilizing community resources by relaying information

regarding client and/or family needs to the appropriate health care team member.

12.Utilize the nursing process in the provision of total client care in complex

situations.

13.Continue to safely administer medications, through a variety of routes, with

increasing independence.

14.Continue to accurately document the administration of medications, through a

variety of routes, with increasing independence.

15.Deliver nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse in a variety of

health care settings.

16.Demonstrate management skills and leadership qualities.

17.Define the nurse’s responsibilities regarding continuing education.

Methods of Teaching/Learning:

Instructional methods used in this course include 11 Learning Activity Packets (LAPs), discussion, videos, computer assisted instruction, online access programs, required readings, and written assignments.

Course Hours:

This course consists of 100 hours of theory and 132.5 hours of concurrent clinical experience.

Relation to Clinical Experience:

Concurrent clinical experience provides 132.5 hours of medical-surgical nursing with medication administration integrated. Students are assigned to provide more complex nursing care. Students complete written clinical assignments by researching the disease process and results of diagnostic tests, completing head-to-toe assessments, and revising or contributing to the revisions of care plans on each client. Students also contribute to discharge planning and client teaching.

Method of Evaluation:

Evaluation of the student’s progress is determined by raw points received on LAP assignments, quizzes and exams according to the PN Student Handbook. The student must achieve a minimum of 80% to successfully complete this course.
