Honors Geometry Portfolio

Goal:

You will keep a portfoliothroughout the course to collect work which you will then reflect upon for assessment. Your assessment portfolio will be a subset of your classwork notebook/binder and will be collected: after Chapter 4 and after Chapter 8. Your portfolio will demonstrate thinking, growth over time, mathematical connections, your view of yourself as a mathematician, and a variety of problem solving approaches.

Items you should collect on an on-going basis (keep in folder):

  • Class investigations
  • Sketchpad explorations & problems
  • Projects
  • Assessments & corrections
  • Homework assignments
  • Writing samples
  • Proofs
  • Collaborative explorations & extensions
  • Samples of your “favorite” or “best” work (you get to choose the criteria!)

Items recommended to be included in each portfolio collection (An updated list of requirements was given in class!)

  1. A geometry proof (your choice, two-column, paragraph, or flow)
  2. A sketchpad printout (fit to page, color if possible) or exploration piece with a written explanation of how the construction was made and what the problem or investigation demonstrates.
  3. A particularly challenging problem you completed, including a diagram and all work.
  4. A challenging, satisfying, or impressive homework assignment you completed with a description of why you chose this assignment.
  5. A piece of work from Geometry or some other class that demonstrates the connection between Geometry and other disciplines (art, music, history, science, language arts, etc.). Include a description of how/why you chose this piece.
  6. A test or quiz with corrections attached and work shown neatly.
  7. A copy or digital image of a unit project or exploration (individual or if group project include an individual reflection of your contributions).
  8. Your favorite piece of work from the quarter (it may be your most creative, most challenging, or best work). Include a few sentences which describe why you chose this piece as your favorite work from the quarter.
  9. A one-paragraph mathematical “autobiography reflection” letter (see rubric for what this must include).

YOUR SECOND COLLECTION SHOULD INCLUDE 7 ITEMS (NOT INCLUDING YOUR REFLECTION)

Selection of materials shows some thought. / Includes one sample for each required item .
Selection of items shows development of mathematical concepts.
Selections represent a variety of problem solving strategies. / Selection of items clearly demonstrates reflection over work, in particular: growth over time,self-assessment, and self-correction of work.
Items included are of good quality.
