Advanced English 9 Syllabus

Welcome!

You have been placed in Advanced English because you have shown both an interest and an academic talent in this content area. The purpose of this class is to fulfill your interest in the subject while refining and developing your skills, as well as preparing you for college level academic courses and the advanced placement exams in eleventh and twelfth grade. Advanced English is a rigorous course with many requirements and expectations. As your teacher, I will assume you are college bound and will help push you toward academic success and the fulfillment of the A-G requirements for college entrance.

Course Description:

English 9 expands students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in alignment with Common Core State Standards. In addition, this course will provide extensive development of the writing process aligned with the Modern Language Association (MLA) format, critical literary response and analysis skills and cross-curricular study. Students will learn and perfect WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies, including Socratic Seminars, Philosophical Chairs, close reading, and other strategies that promote rigor in order to support the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards.

Classroom Rules and Procedures:

When these rules and procedures are followed, the class will be a smooth-running environment in which everyone feels comfortable; therefore enhancing everyone’s learning!

Rules:

  1. Respect: yourself, your peers, the teacher, the classroom, other staff, and school property.
  2. Be willing: to believe, to learn, to take risks, to think outside of the box, and work hard.
  3. Be prepared: with materials, homework, and energy
  4. Communicate: with me, school staff, your peers, and your parents in an understanding, respectful, and adult-like manner.
  5. No cell phones/iPods/any electronics unless otherwise stated by teacher
  6. No food/ drinks without a cap/ gum
  7. Students caught cheating on any assignment or tests will receive zero points. If you let someone copy your work, both parties will receive zero points. (Plagiarism is covered in the student handbook as well).

Processes for Class:

Disciplinary action will also be given to those who do not follow the following procedures:

  1. Come into class each morning ready to write or read (this means you need your Writer’s Notebook and your SSR book every day).
  2. Sharpen pencils when the teacher is not talking.
  3. Bathroom breaks will be given, but taking advantage of this privilege is not tolerated. Do not ask me if you can go while I’m teaching; unless it is an emergency.
  4. Disputes between students need to be resolved in a respectful, understanding manner. Teacher should not need to intervene.
  5. Do not pack up before the bell rings.
  6. The reading beach area is a special addition to this classroom. Respect the area by not eating, drinking, or chewing gum, disturbing others while they read (humming, talking, giggling, etc), not leaning against walls or book shelves, and putting books, bean bags, chairs back where they belong neatly. Privileges to use the beach will be revoked if these rules are broken.

Consequences:

  1. Student-teacher conference to remedy the problem.
  2. Call home to parent / guardian, and set up a meeting if necessary.
  3. Refer to the office for appropriate discipline.

Attendance:

  1. Attendance is of utmost importance. Make sure you are here.
  2. If you are absent it is expected that you check the calendar in the front of the classroom to see what you missed the day before. Making up your work is YOUR responsibility.
  • Any handouts/notes that you need, will be in the filing box in the front of the classroom labeled “extra”
  1. If you miss a test/quiz, you will need to make it up at break/lunch/after school. Again, it is your responsibility for YOU to come talk to me about when you would like to make up your test/quiz.
  2. The attendance and tardy policies stated in your Student Handbook will be followed.

Process for turning in work if you are absent:

If you’re absent, simply write “ABSENT” and the date you were absent at the top of your work and turn it into me.
