Advanced Art Sketchbook Assignments
Second Quarter
Gesture to Abstract: due November 10
For this project you will do two drawings. The first will be a quick guesture study of you in the mirror, holding an interesting pose. The second will be an abstracted “Henry Moore” style figure drawing of the same posture. Please create a negative space which states something about your personality.
Enlargement: due November 18
Please choose an interesting picture of a person or part of a person from a magazine. Choose a small “view” of this photo and enlarge it. You may use the grid method or freehand. Pay attention to accurate values and textures.
Doodlemania: due November 24
Have fun! You will fill an entire sketchbook page, with white borders please, with doodles. These doodles are yours to create. They could be line and shape or more realistic. The doodles should be unified enough that this page could be considered one piece of art and not many. Please use black pen, marker, and pencil only.
Earth, Air, Water, Fire: due December 9
This is a very open assignment. Use your own imagination. You can paint, draw, collage, or sculpt for this homework assignment. The work must show at least two or three hours of effort. The rule is, show one or all of these elements in an interesting and enticing way.
Dream house, floor plan: due December 15
You are taking these floor plans and front view drawings to the architect today. Show us your dream house. Neatness, labeling, proportion, and creativity are key here. Not only do we want to see bird’s eye view floor plans, we want to see what the front of the house will look like. Neatness and perspective count!
Self Portrait: due January 5
For this project you will look in a mirror and start with a contour sketch or gesture sketch of your face. Practice a few times (I want to see the practices). Then, when you feel ready, do a realistic rendering of your face, hair, neck and shoulders. Start very light and build shadow, where you see it. You must use a mirror and not a photo please!
Egyptian Cartouche: due January 13
For this project, you will research the two main hieroglyphic alphabets and create a cartouche. It must use typical Egyptian art colours and design. The cartouche must be the size of your sketchbook paper and will be your own personal stamp. Feel free to spice it up a bit!
