Intensive Training in Motivational Interviewing-MINT

Program Description

Motivational Interviewing is an effective goal oriented approach for clarifying and influencing patient motivation as well as strengthening commitment for positive behavior change. Consistent with the stages of change model developed by Prochaska and DiClemente (1986) and based on the work of Miller and Rollnick (1991), motivational interviewing uses a collaborative communication style that improves understanding of the patient’s concerns, strengths and preferences and enhances efforts by the caregiver to guide and support self care management behaviors. This two-day intensive introduction will provide participants with an intensive exposure to the concepts, skills, and orientation of Motivational Interviewing. The focus will be on increasing understanding of when and how MI is an appropriate intervention and an exploration of the core tenets.

In addition, the introduction offers exposure to and a chance to practice key skills for beginning proficiency at MI. These skills will be taught and demonstrated, and a discussion of assessing quality of MI will be included.

Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program participants should be able to:

·  discuss the foundations of motivational interviewing;

·  review principles and theory of change;

·  identify the principles, philosophy, and assumptions of motivational interviewing; and

·  describe and practice specific motivational skills and techniques.

This program has been planned for Sandhills Center staff and providers of mental health, I/DD, and substance use disorder services.
