  1. Healthwatch – Alvin Kinch, Healthwatch

As of 1st April 2013, Healthwatch Southwark replaced Local Involvement Network Southwark as the health and social care consumer champion in the borough. The presentation outlined the following:
  • Purpose and functions
  • Representation
  • Governance arrangements
  • Next 6 months
The presentation can be downloaded here
The session included a discussion section on the health and social care needs of Southwark. The following points were raised:
  • Advice and information – people need more – online and by telephone
  • Welfare benefits in particular
  • Better signposting
  • How to make complaints – flowchart needed
  • Lack of advocacy in Southwark
  • Diabetes- patients not having enough information about the care they should have and where to go to for advice
  • Attitudes of GPs- their approach to patients, short consultation times
  • Developing consistency in quality of provision
  • Health inequalities
  • Change of Mental Health commissioners
  • Review of day services- not clear enough as to what is happening, services being changed without consultation
  • Consultations- not just about being consulted but who providers and commissioners want to contribute to the consultations Example given - being a staff member wanting to contribute to consultations but as not a service user cannot contribute though has links to service users
  • Personal Budgets- need for greater understanding needed amongst service users regarding the timescales involved and the process as a whole (including people with learning disabilities)
  • More accessible information for partially sighted people and deaf people
Attendees were then asked what intelligence do they have/can they provide and how many service users they work with. The response was as follows:
People Care Association
500 people
Inspections of Adult Social Care facilities – questioning residents and staff
Southwark Carers
Represent 21,000 carers in the borough, 3,000 of which are active service users
Research from the Carers Trust, Carers Ukinc. Southwark Consultation exercise + own annual surveys (around 700 respondents last year)
SRA
30 Service users
Lots of intelligence/case histories. Please ask for more info.
Age UK
5000 people annually
Info from lay inspection of care homes and starting to have info from domicillary care. Stories from others services too but not specifically regarding Health and Social Care
Metropolitan
100 service users
Diabetes Modernisation Initiative
Patient Forum – 60 members, Parent Supporet group 30 people, working adults with type 1 diabetes 20.
Archive of patient experience of diabetes services, including inequalities. Mapping experience of GP practices at meeting on 26 April.
