“Are you adding records for Masters Theses by Coursework to the NBD?” / Email reply to clarification Question “Are the terms coursework or course work are added to the NBD record?
Probably this would be in fields 500 or 502. If not, is there another method used to identify them as coursework as opposed to research?” / Kinetica Results – for historical perspective
248 records use the words coursework or course work or course-work in the 500 502 MARC fields.

Fax: 03 9953 3615 / At Australian Catholic University our Collection Development Policy specifies that theses for Masters by Research, Doctoral theses, and Honours these are included within the library's collections, and catalogued. They are then uploaded to the NBD as part of the normal
UNILINC uploads.
However, local campus libraries still have the option of incorporating "theses" that form part of Masters by coursework into the campus collection if they determine that they are appropriate. These too will be catalogued, and therefore also upload to the NBD. So a few but no means all will find their way into the NBD. / Our template for cataloguing theses (including by coursework) says to use
the 502 field so we would have a note there. / YES

fax 02 6125 3215 / ANU adds records for Master Theses by Coursework to the NBD / In response to your further query, bibliographic records for theses included in the ANU Library catalogue do not include a field or note about whether the thesis is for a course of study undertaken by coursework (course work) or research. In the bibliographic record we add a 502 field, a dissertation note, which provides the designation of an academic dissertation or thesis and the institution to which it was presented. For example:
Thesis (M.A.)--Australian National University, 2002 OR Thesis (Ph.D.)--Australian National University, 2002.
Accordingly, ANU records submitted to the NBD also do not include this information.

It appears that the terminology used for these works at Flinders is different from the usual theses and it also appears to vary between departments eg. Research Dissertation, Research Thesis Project, etc instead of simply Thesis (PhD) or (MA).

One could of course have a philosophical discussion at this point about whether or not an essay submitted in completion of a 'by coursework' degree is really a thesis or not- but I won’t go there...

Margaret Jones
Director, University Library Services, / Murdoch Library receives a small number of Masters by Coursework theses, which are all added to the NBD. However, we do not intend adding them to ADT at this point.
At present there is a clear requirement for a digital and print copy of research theses to be placed in the library, but no such regulations exist for Masters by Coursework. / We don’t distinguish between Masters and Masters by Coursework in the catalogue record. There is no reference to coursework or course work. We can’t think of an easy way of separating them out (without investigating each one).

03 818 3651 / Our Cataloguing Librarian, John Butera, advises that Swinburne does add coursework masters theses to the NBD.
Our understanding is that different criteria apply from those that restrict ADT to research degrees only. / Unfortunately, there is no reference to coursework in the records we send to Kinetica, nor in our system - which means there's no easy automated way of identifying them.
Most can probably be identified by the award - MBAs for instance are all coursework. We could do this manually if required - but over the years there have been changes and individual inconsistencies in the information that appears on title pages etc, so even manual checking of the items themselves may not always be conclusive!
Would it be useful to start adding a note in NBD records to indicate research/coursework? Who would set guidelines on this?

Fax: 08 83034369 / The University of Adelaide Library sends all records for new theses to the NBD.
We provide full cataloguing for all higher degree theses, including coursework masters.
We provide descriptive cataloguing only for honours degree theses, with the exception of 1st class Law honours. Those get full cataloguing because the Law School requires this, but there are so few that the extra effort is not an issue.
We have found that there are about 1000 records for theses that are not on the NBD yet. It seems that there was a period in the 1960s that somehow missed full cataloguing. We have been in negotiation with the NBD and will send them a sample of the brief records, because they will still consider adding them to the NBD despite their brevity to ensure a full record. These records will include the scanned t.p.s, contents and abstract attached to the bib record, and users can see immediately if they are useful. (Once they find them, with only author and title entries). These brief records will eventually receive full original cataloguing, and the record upgraded in the NBD.
