MAIN PURPOSE
  • To provide a complementary learning mentor service to teachers and staff at SMCPA, addressing the needs of children who require support to overcome barriers to learning at school and at home in order to achieve their full potential.
  • To work with individual and groups of children, their families and other professionals to address issues relating to behaviour.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • To identify and remove those barriers to learning that prevent pupils from achieving their full potential.
  • To contribute to the comprehensive assessment of pupils as required.
  • To work with all appropriate staff and agencies to assist in the drawing up and implementation of an action plan for individual pupils with regards to their learning and behaviour.
  • To contribute to the development of innovative ways of working with children who are challenging and to deliver personal development programmes.
  • To establish a productive working relationship with pupils, acting as a role model and assisting them to make positive choices regarding their learning and behaviour.
  • To encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage in activities
  • To anticipate and manage pupil behaviour constructively and consistently whilst recognising and responding to individual needs.
  • To promote independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance.
  • To liaise with class teachers / subject leaders
  • To assess and track both academic and behavioural progress
  • To keep up to date records and provide accurate feedback and reports as required on pupil progress and achievement, using agreed procedures

  • To undertake a range of supervisory duties as required.
  • To prepare and present reports on pupil progress in relation to targets identified in IEPs/ Pastoral Support Plans.
  • To provide feedback to pupils, parents and other staff in relation to achievement with behaviour, attendance and learning
  • To assist in staff development sessions
  • To exemplify practices for the safeguarding of children.
  • To undertake the duties of the post with full regard to all SMCPA policies.
  • To carry out other duties as may be required, commensurate with the function and grade of the post.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
Because of the nature of the post, candidates are not entitled to withhold information regarding convictions by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemptions) Order 1975 as amended. Employees are required to give details of any convictions on their application form and are expected to disclose such information at the appointed interview.
Because the post allows substantial access to children, candidates are required to comply with departmental procedures in relation to police checks.

Fully and positively participate in the School’s performance management & appraisal/ performance related pay/performance development scheme in order to develop and enhance personal and service performance.
