Adjunct Faculty: Instructions for Application using Equivalent Experience

The History Instructional Council (IC) of the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) is firmly committed to maintaining high quality teaching standards and expertise among the History faculty of the MCCCD. In response to the Higher Learning Commission’s “Determining Qualified Faculty: Guidelines for Institutions and Peer Reviewers,” August 2015, to make the primary academic teaching qualifications at the community college include either a Master’s degree in the teaching field or a Master’s degree in any area teaching field with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field, the History IC supports the following guidelines for determining if degrees and coursework are within the teaching fields of History and Futures Studies, respectively.
A Master’s degree (or higher) in any of the following areas is within the teaching field of History:
History, American Studies/Civilization, African American/African/Africana Studies, Chicana/Chicano/Hispanic/Latino Studies, Juris Doctor degree, or a Master’s degree in Education with an Emphasis in the field of History

Graduate level coursework with the following prefixes, titles, or keywords is within the teaching field of History:

POS courses with an emphasis on the Constitution. Prefixes, which align with any of the aforelisted teaching fields per the institution and any 400-level course that is also cross-listed as a 500+ level course. NOTE: Depending on the higher education institution and the year/s in which graduate level coursework was/were earned, the graduate level coursework may be numbered differently. Transcript keys must be reviewed accordingly to see what courses are designated as graduate level or cross-listed as graduate level credit.

Equivalent (Tested) Experience

To qualify under equivalent experience, faculty must have earned a Master’s degree in a related field (that is, Humanities, International Relations, Political Science) and 18 equivalent graduate credits in History. Applicants may submit a portfolio, via cover letter and the Equivalent Experience Matrix beginning on page two, of education/experience for evaluation by the Department/Division Chair.

Applicant Instructions:

In your cover letter, and using the Equivalent Experience Matrix below, please reflect upon your professional experience and explain which of the equivalent experience criteria you meet in each category (Education, Teaching Experience, and Professional Development). Upload the Equivalent Experience Matrix to your application and available supporting documentation as attachments. NOTE: for purposes of application, unofficial transcripts may be uploaded.
