Temple Torat Emet

Adds New Scholars Program

To Jewish High School

(Boynton Beach, Fl ) Orly Jacobs, Education Director for Temple Torat Emet and Steve Gross, K-12 Education Committee Chair, stated today that, as a result of last year’s highly successful Jewish High School program at the Sheila and Marvin Horowitz Hebrew High School (HIP), a new expanded Scholars Program has been added for enrolled students to select from.

“We had 22 students enroll in HIP last year. This year, those standard course offerings will have 18 new sessions open to the entire Jewish community for students in grades 8-12. Returning students will be eligible for an increased stipend per class attended with bonuses” explained Ms. Jacobs.

“We are also introducing an expanded program for our Temple Torat Emet 8-12th grade students with an opportunity to earn $552 for the year. Each student will be required to attend class and complete spiritual and religious criteria from a selection of activities including leading and attending services, delivering a Dvar Torah, performing volunteer work in the community, and shadowing a member of our clergy, amongst others” added Mr. Gross. The class is expected to have around 30 students enroll.

Andy Greenberg, the HIP founder commented “We successfully used the Scholars Program for years in Omaha, NE. Students who participated went on to make Judaism an important part of their lives. Classes this year will include special guest speakers (Jewish Siberian prisoners, Israeli soldiers) and classes that focus on Jewish lifestyles and heroes in business, sports, politics as well as prayer understanding and development. We are able to do this through the support of the Horowitz family and a special education grant.” Added Ms. Jacobs, “The courses are open to all students in grades 8-12 (Temple members or non-members) even if they have no knowledge of Hebrew, or have forgotten things that they have learned.”

Returning student Alex Brewer encouraged his sister to join this year and stated “interesting classes and earning money were the reasons he wants to join the program again” while first time 8th grader Travis Grzelak is joining because “I am going back to Hebrew school to advance and further my education and understanding in Jewish lifestyles and customs, and also to create new and keep existing bonds with the fellow students in my class.”

Michael Klein, Ritual Director, remarked “I am thrilled to see so many High school students in the building and know that this year many will also elect to be part of our spiritual as well as educational programs through HIP Scholars.”
