February Homework

This is the required homework for the month of February. Each week, 3 Language Arts activities must be completed along with one activity from Reading, Social Studies/ Science/Health, and Math. Sometimes you will also see a math worksheet to complete for the week. Parents must initial each activity as it is finished. Homework is due every Friday for that week’s work. (Homework may be turned in as it is completed but no later than Friday).

****Additionally, students are expected to read books on their level for 15 minutes each day. Please continue to have your child write down his/her book titles on his/her Book Log.

Language Arts / Reading / Math / Social Studies / Science
*Each week one assignment will be for students to create a list of 12 words that go with their weekly class patterns.
Look in a magazine. See if you can find and cut out 5 words that have prefixes or suffixes. Next to these words, tell how they changed the base word.
Look up 4 of your weekly words in the dictionary. Tell the meaning and part of speech.
Pick your favorite book. Write aparagraph (at least 5 sentences) telling why I should read this to the class. Think about OREO.
Think about a character from a story you have read. Draw a picture of your character and write 5 adjectives that would describe them.
Type your weekly word list on the computer. After you print it, highlight the vowels.
Write an informational piece about your favorite relative. Make sure to include an opening, body and closing. (at least 5 sentences)
Make a word search that goes with your weekly pattern and solve.
Write your weekly spelling list in cursive. (must be at least 10 words)
Think about your best friend. Compare yourself using comparative adjectives. Ex. Taller
Write 4 sentences using quotation marks. Make sure to tell who is talking.
Make a list of adverbs you found in a story. (minimum of 5) Choose 2 to use in a sentence. Underline the verbs they are telling about. / Choose a picture from a story you are reading. Tell how that picture helps you understand your story.
Read a non-fiction story. Record the title of the story. Tell how 2 of the non-fiction text features helped you understand the story better. Ex: photographs, labels, bold words…
Retell the plot of a story you read this week. Make sure to use transition words.
Illustrate your favorite part of the story. Below it write 2 sentences telling about it.
Visit Moby Max. Complete a reading assignment. Parents must initial that this was completed.
Use a Venn Diagram to compare 2 different characters you read about this week. It could be two from the same story. (Use lots of adjective describing words)
Fiction Non-fiction

All writing assignments must include at least 5 sentences and follow our 3rd grade writing rules. / Solve the following problem. Make sure to include a picture, number sentence and explanation.
Lilly is having a Valentine’s party. She invited 6 friends. She wants to give each friend 3 cupcakes with 4 chocolate chips on each. How many chocolate chips does Lilly need to buy?
Fact families help us with our math fluency. Create 3 fact families.
Draw 4 shapes. Partition each shape into equal parts. (Make each shape into different parts). Label the unit fractions.
We have been learning about equivalent fractions. Tell a fraction that is equivalent to the following: ½, 2/3, ¾ . Draw a picture to go with each.
Visit Moby Max. Complete a math assignment. Parents must initial that the assignment was completed.
Choose at least one of the above math activities to complete each week. A weekly math worksheet may come home in your child’s folder with the due date indicated at the top. / We had a Pilgrim visit 3rd grade. What is one challenge the pilgrims had to overcome?
Think back to our pilgrim visit. Tell 2 additional things you learned about pilgrims.
Choose an explorer that you’ve learned about. Create a poster telling why they were important. (make sure to choose a different explorer)
List the 4 productive resources. Cut out a picture from a magazine that would go with each.

Tell one way your life is similar and different from the New England Colonies.
We are learning about New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southern Colonies. Choose one colony to do a report on. Make sure to tell what their climate, occupations and one similarity that you have. / We have been learning about plants and animal adaptations. Choose an animal. Tell an adaptation it has. How does this adaptation help it?
We have learned about the five Georgia habitats. Choose a habitat to create a poster on. Your poster must tell your habitat, where it is located in Georgia and three facts about it.
