A set of parallel CMR analyses has been computed. All the possible combinations of sites were set up (sites are iteratively pooled together by 2,3 or 4) and compared with the site model {phi (site) p (.)} allowing survival estimates to vary for each site and assuming a constant recapture probability.

The best sub-model (phi [01-02-03][04][05]) was the only model significantly different from the site model (AICsite_model-AICphi([01-02-03][04][05] = 2.65).

Table S1. “Grouping site” CMR models of survival and capture probabilities ranked by their Akaike’s Information Criterion corrected for small sample size (AICc). Model parameters are phi: apparent survival probability, p: probabilities of capture is considered as constant. ΔAICc = difference in AICc score between the focus model and the most parsimonious model, No. par = the number of estimable parameters used in each model. The numbers 01,02,03,04 and 05 correspond to sites codes (see table 1 for description) and [ ] = grouping of sites.
