Adaptation Tip of the Week #1-Chunking Work

Do you teach a student who:

·  Gets overwhelmed by large assignments or when they see a lot of words on a page

·  Has difficulty finishing assignments

·  Has difficulty with due dates

·  Never seems to know what is involved in an assignment

An adaptation that may work for students like these is chunking assignments.

In order to properly chunk assignments you need to do several things:

1.  Decrease the number of instructions on one page or

2.  Break the instructions down into several smaller steps

3.  Assign only one or two parts of the assignment at one time

4.  Give the student mini due dates for each section of the assignment

** It is important to remember that depending upon the student, the final due date should coincide with the due date of the rest of the class, however, some student may need longer.

** It is also important that the student know that there are other parts to the assignment, otherwise they may think they have all the time in the world to do one small part.

Regular Assignment:

Global Geography 12 Project

Making Connections

Instructions:

People all over the world express themselves in different ways and through different mediums. Your assignment is to find a piece of work that relates to any of the topics we have covered in Global Geography class this year, explain the work, and show the connection it has to this course. Remember The Lorax by Dr. Seuss? Of course you may not use this book, but keep it in mind. There will be various other movies that will be used in this class that will also be off limits, make sure you check with your teacher before selecting a piece of work.

You may choose from any of the following mediums:

·  Novels

·  Children’s Books

·  Poetry

·  Music

·  Movies

·  TV Shows

·  Artwork

·  Video Games

·  Comics/Cartoons

·  Short Stories

Requirements:

1.  A 1-2 page summary, interpretation, or analysis of the piece of work outlining the contents, (and a copy of the piece of work if it is reasonable to attach).

2.  A 3-5 page paper explaining the connection the piece of work has to the Global Geography topic you have selected. Use specific examples from the work.

3.  A 1-2 page answer to the following questions:

a) Explain why the piece of work you have selected is effective or ineffective in getting the global message across to its viewer/reader.
