Adam Pottery Studio Space

Further Details

1.The Pottery

The Adam Pottery was established by Janet Adam in 1983, and provides studio space for five tenant ceramic artists and potters in addition to Janet’s own working space.

2.The studio space

The tenants’ studio space is divided into two rooms, one with three benches and one with two benches. The space available now is in the three-person room.

The bench area is approx. 220cm by 80cm, with shelving and one double-socket power point.

All tenants are responsible for providing their own materials and equipment.

Each tenant is issued with their own set of keys, and can use the studio space at any time.

3.Trial period and notice period

For all new tenants there is a three month trial period, at the end of which the tenancy can be terminated if either party so wishes.

If all parties agree that the tenancy is to continue, a notice period of one month will be required if either party wishes to terminate the tenancy at any point.

4.Kilns

There are three electric kilns available for tenants’ use. Kiln time is booked in advance using a calendar system.

  • Rohde kiln: this is a round top-loader with an electronic controller. The chamber dimensions are 67cm high and 51.5 cm diameter.
  • Pottery Crafts kiln: this is a rectangular front-loader with an electronic controller. The chamber dimensions are 74cm high, 45cm wide and 60cm deep.
  • Cromartie kiln: this is small, round top-loader which is fired using pyrometric cones. The chamber dimensions are 34 cm high and 36cm diameter.

5.The Gallery

In addition to the studio space, The Pottery also has a Gallery in which tenants can display and sell their work on a zero-commission basis.

It should be noted that displaying work for sale in the Gallery is subject to the approval of Janet Adam and the other tenants, and depends on both the standard of the work and its compatibility with the other work on show in the Gallery at the time. It can take anything from a few weeks to over a year before a new tenant displays their work.

6.Gallery cover

The Gallery’s opening hours are 11am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. From January to March, the Gallery closes at 5pm.

Each tenant of The Pottery is responsible for looking after the Gallery one working day per week, with a six-week rota for Saturdays. Providing this cover is essential in order to keep the Gallery open, but it does not significantly impede the tenants’ ability to work on their own projects.

7.Insurance

Prospective tenants should note that The Pottery’s insurance does NOT cover the work, materials or equipment of the tenants. The Pottery takes no responsibility for the damage or loss of tenants’ property.

8.Website

The Pottery has a website, with pages for each of the artists. Pages for new tenants are created as-and-when they start to display their work in the Gallery. The url for the website is www. adampottery.co.uk.

9.Facebook

The Pottery has a Facebook page. Tenants are encouraged to post comments and photographs relating to the Pottery, including details and comments about their own work. It is important to remember, however, that the Facebook page is an Adam Pottery page, and must not be used solely as a way to raise the personal profile of individual tenants. The Facebook page can be found at:

10.Costs

There are a number of charges of which prospective tenants should be aware:

a.Rent

Rent is paid monthly in arrears. In the three-bench room, the rent per bench is £50 per month, and in the two-bench room the rent per bench is £60 per month. This includes a significant proportion of general electricity costs for heating and lighting. In addition, each tenant also pays a further £10 per monthas a contribution to the cost of the Pottery Crafts kiln which was purchased in 2012.

b.Firing costs

Each tenant pays for their own firing costs, which are calculated from the meter readings for each kiln. A flat rate charge is made per unit of electricity consumed, with a small additional charge per unit which is added to a fund from which kiln maintenance costs are met (eg new elements when required).

c.Telephone charges

Each tenant is allocated a telephone code for personal callswhich they must enter before dialling the telephone number they want to reach. This enables telephone charges to be calculated separately for each tenant.

d.Shared costs

There are a number of shared costs, including general electricity usage (over-and-above that covered by the rent), marketing costs, health-and-safety checks (eg PAT testing) website domain name charges, consumables (eg bubble wrap, parcel tape) etc.

e.Billing

All charges except rent are billed on a quarterly basis.
