WBTC Chapter 1 & 2 Review (STUDY!)
*Chpt 1 & 2 EVENTS ---
-Adam (is white) lives in an upper class, rich neighborhood.
-Amy (is Japanese) lives in a middle class neighborhood.
-Adam gives Amy butterflies in your stomach (Figurative Language) whenever they’re together.
-Papa is strict says Amy must come right home after the dance.
-Amy swallows her disappointment, instead of telling her father how she really feels.
-Papa had to work in an Internment came (where Japanese in the US were sent in the 1940’s)
-Amy swallows feelings and doesn’t invite Carol & Juan to hang out.
-Amy gets embarrassed after teaching people the hula.
*Bigoted/name-calling moment between Justin & Juan
“Enchilada/Gabacho.” – They are both considered a Bigot.
-Papa and Amy both have to take the blinders off of their eyes/open the shutters behind their eyes (to realize and really see what’s happening around them).
-Amy gets in trouble for breaking curfew – Papa shares that if she had been out with a Japanese boy, he would have had respect and had her home on time (which is a stereotype).
-Amy is uncomfortable calling Adam's home.
-Amy feels like hired help from Adam’s mother,Mrs. Tarcher.
-Papa has Sexist beliefs and thinks that cooking and being in the kitchen is women’s work.
-Papa dismisses/doesn’t understand the Color Game.
-The family has an awkward dinner, very much between Hideo/Sue and Papa.
-Sue and Hideo announce that they are having a baby.
*VOCAB:
1) Intriguing – fascinating; exciting curiosity of.
2) Emphasize – give special importance to something.
3) Condescending – showing superior feelings (like you’re better than someone else – making them feel inferior)
4) Tolerate –to put up with; to respect (the rights & beliefs of others)
5) Snide – rude or mocking comments or actions.
6) Bigot –a person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people or ideas (refuses to accept others).
*THEMES:
Judgments & Assumptions – to guess things about something or someone, based on what you see. (without proof)
Stereotypes are assumptions that people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, often based on what some people in that group are like (all these people are the same...)
Social Class: Your status in society; how much money you make.
Lower class ---- Middle Class ---- Upper Class
Discrimination orPrejudiceis an unfair treatment of someone, usually by judging their race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender, appearance...
Racismwhen you think a certain race is better than or less than, or when you treat people unfairly because of their race.
Sexism is discrimination on the basis of gender (most commonly against women)
A bigot = someone who acts in a Racist or a Prejudice way.
