ACUP Supplement BAnesthesia, Monitoring,and Surgery

B.1PI Assurance of Participant Competency

Identify who will perform:

Surgical support and pre-operative procedures:

Anesthetic procedures:

Surgical procedures:

Post-operative monitoring and procedures:

As applicable, the IACUC and LARC recommends completion of the following CITI courses and modules, prior to hands-on training in procedures related to aseptic surgery:

Aseptic Surgery

Surgery

Post-Procedural Care of Mice and Rats

The Aseptic Surgery and Surgery modules can be found in the “Supplemental Modules” section of the Working with the IACUC course. Post-Procedural Care of Mice and Rats can be found in the Main Course List.

I certify that all participants responsible for the above procedures are, or will be, sufficiently trained with the appropriate skill set before performing any independent work.

B.3Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Supportive Care Equipment

Describe equipment used to deliver, maintain, and monitor anesthetic procedures:

B.4Aseptic Techniques

For each related procedure listed in the List of Events and Animal Procedures Table in Section 5.3, provide a species-specific description of the procedure. Please attach any related SOPs.

The description should include, as applicable:

Sterilization method used for instruments, equipment and supplies

Use of sterile gloves, gowns, drapes, mask, cap, sterile implants, and sterile suture/closure material;

If some surgical instruments are used for multiple animals, describe how the instruments and the surgical area are managed to assure continued sterility

Description:

B.5Pre-surgical Procedures

Provide a species-specific description of any anesthesia, monitoring and surgery procedure in listed in ACUP Section 5.3List of Events and Animal Procedures. Please attach any related SOPs.

The description should include, as applicable:

Pre-procedural assessment of the patient

Preparation of surgery room/area

Physiological support (temperature support, fluids)

Preparation of anatomical site (animal)

Preparation of surgeon

Pre-operative drug administration (analgesics, antibiotics, therapeutics, etc.), per substance administration tables listed in ACUP Section 6.1 and Supplement B.2

Description:

B.6Surgical Procedures Table

A major surgical procedure includes those that enter a body cavity, produce substantial impairment of physical or physiologic functions, or involves extensive tissue dissection or transection.

A minor surgical procedure doesnot expose a body cavity, and causes little or no impairment. This would include many procedures routinely done on an “outpatient” basis in clinical veterinary practice.

A terminal surgical procedure is one in which the patient is not recovered from anesthesia after the procedure is performed. Note below if the procedures are terminal or survival.

Note: The Attending Veterinarian (or designee) and the IACUC have the authority to determine whether a procedure is minor or major.

Procedure Location
Species / Procedure / Building / Room

B.7Multiple Procedures Performed on an Animal

Will multiple procedures be performed on an animal for study purposes?

Yes No

If Yes, describe the timeline for performing multiple procedures, and indicate the maximum number of procedures to be performed on any animal.

Will multiple, major survival surgical procedures be performed on an animal for study purposes over the course of its lifetime?

Yes No

Provide scientificjustification for performing multiple, major survival surgical procedures on an animal.
