Second Sunday of Easter

Acts 5:12-16; Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19;

John 20:19-31 [45C]

Caravaggio's Doubting Thomas

“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”… “Now Jesus did many other things in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book, but these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.”

How familiar we are with the story of our friend Thomas. The Easter appearance comes to mind. But do you remember him asking Jesus where he was going and how he could know the way? Jesus answered him that He was the way, and the truth and the life. Surely that question is less remembered but of great significance.

Without the way there is no going. Without the truth there is no knowing. Without the life, there is no living.

As John concludes the Gospel text, we recall the theme which was repeated from the first miracle of Jesus through the Resurrection—that we may believe. It might be worthwhile to recount how many times this phrase was repeated in the Gospel. The individual meetings with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman, persons who were healed and those who observed them, are Gospel events intended to bring forth belief. The post-resurrection appearances affirmed the belief of His disciples. ‘Lord, I believe, help my unbelief’

We have not seen, but our belief is genuine and firm as we live as Easter people.

Our new oven is installed!!
Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners and friends of the St. Joe’s Soup Kitchen, we are happy to announce that our new convection oven is installed and operational.
Again, special thanks to Bill Derrough and Alvaro Salas who graciously hosted the major fund raising event at their home to raise the money for the oven. We are doubly blessed with friends of the parish who donated their skills to help with the electrical and plumbing needs.
We encourage our community of St. Joseph to volunteer at the Soup Kitchen. Contact Steve Fanto: 917-754-8901

Celebrating the Year of the Priest

Cathedral of St Patrick Young Adults (a young adult apostolate for those in their 20s and 30s) presents a Movie Night in Honor of the Year of the Priest on April 22, 2010 at Cathedral Parish House, 14 East 51st Street, between Madison and 5th Avenue, from 6:30pm-9pm. During the last few months of the Year of the Priest, the priesthood and the Holy Father are being attacked due to the recent sexual abuse findings. On this night, we will show and discuss the film, “I Confess” which is about a priest falsely accused of murder, even though he heard the confession of the murderer himself. The film portrays the courage of this priest and we hope to show you all that the priesthood is still the most heroic vocation today.
