Activities for Impressionism.

You may have to do a little work for this one, but it will be worth it! Thank you!

  1. You can choose to do the self portrait activity, you can click on it for the kids to watch or to watch yourself before teaching. (instead of the photo below, just have them sketch out their portrait in black and white and then they can add color with crayons, markers, or cut up paper-.

They will not have time to do this with actual watercolor paints unless you want to bring some. I don’t believe the classroom supplies them.

YOU CAN USE CUT OUT PAPER AND THE CRAYONS OR MARKERS MAKE ‘BRUSH STROKES’ SINCE WE WON’T HAVE TIME FOR ACTUAL PAINTING. If they want to take this home and finish it- it’s easy!

2. You can also do A COLOR PASTE WITH RIPPED PIECES OF COLOR: (easier but more time consuming for prep).

Get some standard construction paper:

(not always provided in some classrooms so I will leave some STACKS in the drawer or if you want to contribute or ask your teacher that would be great, too. ANY OR ALL OLD Magazines will also work- JUST NEED TO CUT OUT ‘COLORS’.

Cut these into small pieces or ‘rip them’ and give the students each a variation of colors in order to choose from. Each table should have a myriad of colors to choose from.

Then have them draw a sketch of something on a WHITE SHEET OF PAPER- they can draw flowers, trees, people, buildings, whatever, in order to end up with something that’s impressionistic.

You could also keep one of the famous slides on the smart board up there and they could copy a famous painting like the water lilies by monet. Please check with your teacher to see that they all have glue sticks (they should).

They arrange their colors and paste them into place, and create an impressionistic style paper cut out painting.

You could also print out and copy a few images for them to ‘paste’ on top of, but I think letting them draw or create their own scene is sometimes more creative. Up to you.

You should end up with the following: you can show these examples to the class. I will put them at the end of the powerpoint!
