“The secret to success is to do more than is expected.” – Justin Dehmer

Acting Different Than You Feel or The “Feel Likes”

Lets face the facts. You will not always show up to practice, work, a game, or a presentation feeling 100%. It just doesn’t happen. It is an unrealistic expectation of yourself and your teammates or those you work with. One realistic expectation is that you can still be at your best even when you don’t “feel” your greatest. You can also “feel” great and perform poorly. The trap we get into is that we think feelings are facts. We say I don’t feel like working out today, I don’t feel like finishing this project, or I don’t feel like… We get a case of the “I don’t feel likes,” and we think this gives us an excuse to not put forth effort in this particular area because we are afraid that since we don’t feel good our work won’t be up to par. Remember the secret to success: do more than is expected. No one expects you to put in extra effort when you don’t feel like it. That is the great separator of mediocre and the great.

I have written a few books, many articles, plus blog posts and one thing I have realized is that I won’t always feel like writing but if the time is available for me to work hard then I need to use it to my advantage and put forth the little extra it will take to finish the project. What I have also realized is that my writing when I am tired or don’t feel like writing is not any better or any worse than those days that I feel great and can’t wait to get in front of my computer.

Champions don’t distinguish between feeling great and feeling terrible. They just know that if they want to achieve something then it will take a little extra especially when those days come around when you get a bad case of the don’t feel likes. Dig deep, force yourself to act differently than how you feel and you will be surprised what happens. If you don’t put in the extra time and invest in your dreams I guarantee there will be someone out there who is willing to the extra to become extraordinary.

Take Away K + A = R (Knowledge + Action = Results)

Putting in those extra hours of effort may be the tipping point for your organization and team. Do you have that type of mentality within yourself? These are a few things that may help develop the inner-winner and type of willingness to improve that Robert showed after what was already 7-8 hours of baseball in the midst of one of the hottest summer days. Maybe that is why he was able to win 3 state titles as a wrestler and also 3 with our baseball team. People on the outside would say he is just talented, I would say it is not God given. It has to do with his mindset of becoming better all the time and putting in a little extra.

Anyone can be trained to do anything. The ability to put in extra effort is not something that people are born with. It is something that they learned along the way and I am confident that you too will learn to put in a little extra, even on the days you don’t feel like it. What is your commitment to excellence? Is it in just certain areas of your life or all aspects of your life?
