Hiring update:

·  Math Facilitator: hired – Jesse Pabico – Comes to us from Bishop O’dowd. Jesse will be facilitating primarily high school courses and has four years of experience.

·  Physics and math Facilitator: Hired – Ron Qian – After Ron’s demonstration lesson we knew he was the right fit for our school. He comes to us from Union City.

·  Spanish Facilitator: Hired – Bryanna Fenton – Comes to us from New Orleans where she taught in a private school. Bryanna and her partner are moving here together

·  ELA Facilitator: Hired - Lorely Smith - Comes to us from Nea. She is exceptionally strong and will be a great fit to our middle school team.

·  Middle School Science Facilitator: Hired - Beth Cutright – Beth comes to us from a local private school (Beacon) that is closing. She is experienced and a perfect fit for our school.

·  High School History Facilitator: Hired Pricilla Rodriguez – Pricilla comes to us from Watsonville High where she did her student teaching. This is the perfect next step for her. She has taught both World History and Economics.

·  Lead Facilitator: Hired – Jeremy Goodreau – Jeremy will be our new Lead Facilitator. He comes to us from a private boarding school in Texas where a was head of the middle school.

This year's Spring LLCs will be held on June 7, June 12, and June 14. Learners will be assigned to one of the following sessions:

·  Wednesday, June 7: 2:10 to 3pm or 3:10 to 4pm

·  Monday, June 12: 1:30 to 2:30pm or 2:40 to 3:40pm

·  Wednesday, June 14: 1:30 to 2:30pm or 2:40 to 3:40pm

The prompt is:

Please read all of the instructions carefully so that you know exactly what you need BRING and what you need to WRITE in preparation for your LLC. For this Learner-Led conference you will focus on work you accomplished this year and your community involvement.

·  1) Bring two artifacts (pieces of work) from different subject areas. Write a two-paragraph (minimum 5-7 sentences per paragraph) reflection for each piece of work that you will present at your LLC. Your reflection should address the following:

·  a) What strengths does the work show about you as a learner?

·  b) What challenges did you experience in creating this work?

·  2) Write a one to two-paragraph reflection describing what you have done this past year to contribute to the ACLC community and what your goals are for next year. (Possible examples of this might be: Did you help, or assist a learner and/or a facilitator? How did you participate in school improvement?)

Please come prepared to the conference with your artifacts and the reflections about these two topics.

ACLC College Acceptance: This has been an exciting year with acceptances from many different colleges. Join me in celebrating the hard work from our amazing learners! 82% of our senior class has been accepted to a four-year collage. 100% have post-secondary ambitions that include Junior college, trade school or the military.

Senior Project Night:

Take a minute to enjoy a few of the senior Projects. These learners worked very hard to complete the projects. It is also part of the graduation requirement at ACLC. Very few of the Board members are familiar with these projects and it would be beneficial for any Board member to attend an ACLC senior project night in the future. The evening was split into three classrooms. Lynn Kameny, Danny Bradac and I facilitated the evening. Each room was full of parents, learners and community members who sponsored projects.

CCEF and PAC Update

·  Walk-a-thon: CCEF facilitated another great Walkathon! Learners did it again, and raised nearly $8,000. We also have to thank the ACLC Facilitators and Staff for their great support of the walkathon. Learners and Facilitators took on many volunteer support roles to make the day a great success.

·  4th of July Parade Float. Christine Kovach submitted a proposal to be a part of the 4th of July Parade. Please join us on the float. We are throwing Frisbees and candy along the route.

Cardboard Boat Races

·  The annual Jim Richards Cardboard Boat Races were held at the Emma Hood Swim Center at Encinal High School. The culminating project for ACLC's 8th Grade Science and Nea's 9th grade Physics classes, the Cardboard Boat Project tasks learners to use their knowledge of density, buoyancy, and other physical science topics to design and construct two-person boats made only of cardboard and small amounts of tape, glue, and paint.

Lion King

Mask making has begun was complete. Costumes are have been made. Pride Rock was built. ACLC's Lion King Jr. opened Friday night and was a huge hit. Thank you to all of the parents who gave so much time to props and supervision during the production. Also, Thank you to Lynne Boone who directed the production and coordinated the entire prop making.

DiversityDay

For those of you who do not knowwhatDiversityDayis, it is adaywhere learners can run their own classes and teach other learners skills and lessons. After all the classes listed below, we put on afeastand a raffle for the whole school.We also held a school wide Socratic Dialogue on The Brooklyn Free School.
