What is PAWS and how does it work? PAWS means Practice, Achieve, Work, and Succeed. PAWS is a designated time for students to receive help from their classroom teachers based on their needs on Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and Friday’s only. During this time period, all students must report to their PAWS teachers for attendance. Students must be in their seats by the time the bell rings or they will be counted as tardy. Students will be checked in/out with their PAWS teacher during the first 5 minutes of PAWS. Then, after the 5 min. bell rings, students will leave to go to the teacher they have been assigned to for assistance. Students can only pass to one teacher per PAWS period. Once they are there, they must stay with that teacher that has assigned them for the duration of PAWS.

As stated in the 2017-18Student Handbook, students are to do the following:

  • Bring study material or a reading book
  • Students assigned to see a teacher during PAWS must proceed directly to that teacher when dismissed from the PAWS classroom. Students who do not report to the assigned PAWS teacher are considered unexcused.
  • Classroom rules apply (see below under PAWS CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS).
  • Student organizations meet during PAWS on Tuesday and/or Friday when announced. If a student is deficient in their grades, the PAWS teacher may not let the student attend the organizational meeting at their discretion.
  • All students are expected to participate during PAWS. Students who skip PAWS or leave the building without signing out during PAWS are subject to the CODE OF CONDUCT as stated in the Student Handbook.
  • Students may choose to go to the Silent Study Hall during PAWS. They also may be assigned to a mandatory“Intensive Care”PAWS for academic assistance if they should fall below a “C.”
  • During the 4th Quarter, seniors who are in good standing will be allowed to dismiss from school and are not required to attend PAWS. Those seniors who leave the school grounds may only return to the campus as a “visitor” or activity participant for practice or events.

PAWS CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

PAWS students must come to class prepared, meaning they have textbooks, iPads, materials, etc. Students WILL NOT be allowed to go to their lockers to get their materials under any circumstances. Any student who does not come to PAWS prepared 3 times will be assigned a detention. Parents will be notified.

Students will already have their agenda’s filled out BEFORE coming to PAWS. The teacher will sign the student’s agenda for them to be able to leave. The PAWS teacher will have a “sign-out” sheet she will fill out that will be a record of where the student will be for that day.

During PAWS, students must stay in their assigned seats and work quietly. No talking Students must ask permission from the PAWS teacher PRIOR, if they 1.) desire to work in a group/ with an individual 2.) use their iPad. The PAWS teacher may grant it at their discretion. If a student has completed all their work, they may read quietly. Please have a book at all times in your possession. Not having a book or alternate work shows unpreparedness which will result in a detention. Sitting there doing nothing is not using time wisely nor being prepared. There is also NO VISITING with classmates during PAWS. It is educational time!

CELL PHONES: As stated in the Student Handbook, “Classroom usage of electronics may be determined by the individual instructors.” My art classroom rules regarding cellphones include: All students will relinquish their cell phones at the beginning of PAWS class and place them in a cell phone holder provided. Students will be allowed to pick them up at the end of PAWS. Refusal to relinquish cell phones at the teacher’s request will result in a disciplinary referral for defiance and consequences will result.~Mrs. Cave

DETENTIONS-In the classroom, a student may be assigned detention for a variety of disciplinary reasons as stated in the Student Handbook under Major/Minor Behavior infractions and the Three R’s. Parents will be notified if a detention is assigned. I adhere to the rules as stated in the Atchison County Community Schools Student Handbook regarding attendance and discipline. I fully expect students to review the material and follow it. As always, I maintain discretionary rights. Disciplinary action will be taken according to the student handbook policies

GRADES: Every week or so, I will get with each PAWS student to review their grades from all of their classes. When called, students will pull up their grades on their iPad and we will discuss them. Students need to know how to access their grades online and their passwords. I do not have access to passwords.

iPAD USAGE As stated above, students must ask permission to work on their iPads BEFORE doing so. All iPads must be flat on the desk, not on the lap. Playing games of any kind (even educational), is not allowed in this PAWS class. Cell phones or any other electronic devices such as iPods, MP3 players or earphones may not be used at all in PAWS class. No music, taking pictures and/or videotaping allowed either.

RESTROOM PRIVILEGES: If a student does not have their agenda, they will not be allowed to use the restroom. Students may not use another student’s agenda at any time. If it is an extreme emergency, the teacher will call the office and an administrator will “escort” the student to the restroom. Any student caught abusing their restroom privileges will lose them. The teacher has the right to ask the student to leave their cell phone before they go to the restroom. Refusing to leave the cellphone may result in a disciplinary referral for defiance and consequences will result

*Students are allowed to bring a clear water bottle with water only! No Gatorade, soda pop, etc.

SUBSTITUTES:In the event that I am absent from class and have a substitute teacher, all students will be expected to cooperate and treat the substitute with respect as if it were me. Each substitute teacher is instructed to leave notes on any students misbehaving or not complying with the PAWS rules I have left for the day. If a substitute leaves a negative report on a student, disciplinary action will be taken according to the student’s infraction. Negative reports will result in a student in an automatic disciplinary referral for being uncooperative for a substitute teacher.

*Throughout the school year, I will assist students with their Individual Learning Plan. All parent/guardians will have an opportunity to visit with me during March Parent/Teacher Conferences or any time during the year as you wish.

Thank you,

Mrs. Jeanne Cave
