Access to Learning Fund (ALF)

Each year the Government provides the University with money called the Access to Learning Fund. The aim of the Fund is to support students in financial hardship to access and remain in higher education. Specifically it is used:

·  To assist those who need extra financial help to meet particular costs which are not already being met from statutory (or other) sources of funding and

·  To provide emergency payments for unexpected crises

Educational Grants Advisory Service (EGAS)

EGAS provides a database of charitable trusts providing funding for education or training. You will need to complete an online form, after which an automatic search will take place to identify funding your may be eligible to apply for:

Horizon

Lone parents who are undertaking or planning to undertake education or training that will lead to employment in their chosen field. Applicants must demonstrate a planned course of study to improve their employment prospects and must be living on a low income. This means the applicant will be in receipt of benefits, Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit.

University of Chester Mission Committee Bursary

The University Mission Committee has limited funds available to award student bursaries in any of the following areas:
(a) for student projects and activities, which are consistent with the University's foundational values and mission statement. Appropriate examples include; Work Based Learning or other experiences, which incorporate experiential learning;
(b) for supporting local community projects and voluntary work by students in Chester, Warrington and the surrounding area. Including participants of the University of Chester and 'v involved' Volunteering Projects.
(c) for students who are past participants of projects, activities or volunteer work, which are consistent with the University's foundational values and mission statement who are returning to do volunteer work or study related to their activity.

Santander Awards

Santander Awards for Community Service

Four awards, funded by the Santander Group, of £500 will be made to undergraduate or postgraduate students in recognition of their contribution to community or volunteer projects

Santander Community Project Fund

Applications are invited for project grants, funded by the Santander Group, to support community projects involving students of the University during 2009. Funding is available for at least eight grants of up to £1,000.

Applications must be made by the student, but must include a reference from the community or voluntary sector organisation with whom the project will be undertaken. Applicants must complete a Santander Community Project Grant application form, part of the application pack available from Student Development. Applicants are required to give details of how the grant would be spent, describe why the project should be supported and explain how they and the community or voluntary sector organisation would both benefit from the grant. The deadline for applications is 31 July 2009.

Educational Foundation of Dr Robert Oldfield

Offers grants to students 'towards the cost of university education', but also for travel for educational purposes, books and equipment. To be eligible, students must be born or permanently resident in the Chester District, aged under 25 years and the grants are means tested.

The Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust

Applicants should be normally resident in the United Kingdom and be the son or daughter, spouse, widow or widower of a commercial traveller, chemist, or grocer.

The maximum value of any bursary is £3000 per annum.

Gladstone Fellowship Scheme

The University is able to award up to eight Gladstone Fellowships per year.These are fully-funded 3 year full time PhD studentships. The University funds 50% of each Fellowship, with the other 50% funded externally.

Funds for Women Graduates

FfWG offers Foundation Grants to help women graduates with their living expenses (not fees) while registered for Postgraduate study or research at an approved institution of higher education in Great Britain

Graduate Plus
North West Universities Association (NWUA) has also now launched a unique region-wide project, offering postgraduate bursaries to students. Graduate Plus will award up to 200 graduate bursaries valued up to £1,250 to students studying at one of the region’s 15 universities. The bursaries will be awarded to those students who wish to take a one year Masters programme directed at the high growth sectors. This includes low carbon products and services, digital and media and life sciences.
