Accepting Student Work in Laulima via Drop Box or Assignments Tool:

There are a variety of ways in Laulima to have students submit something for course work, Email, Discussions, Resources, Drop Box and the Assignment tools. This tutorial focuses on the Drop Box and Assignments. Both tools will need to be added to the course via Site Info > Edit Tools.

Drop Box:

The Drop Box feature allows instructors and students to share documents within a private folder for each student. The Drop Box works like Resources to allow you to upload many types of files and many files at a time. The Drop Box also allows nested folders (folders within folders).

Once the Drop Box has been added, students can log into their accounts and begin uploading.

Students only see their own folder.

Students can choose to either upload a file that has been saved on their computer, add a link to an external web site, and even create their file directly from this area by choosing "Create HTML Page".

Typically though, a student will be asked to upload something. For a student to upload they click on "Upload Files".

Click "Browse".

They would click on the file once to select and click "Open".

To complete the upload, click on "Upload Files Now".

The file has been successfully uploaded to their Drop Box.

For the instructor to access anything uploaded to Drop Box, they enter Drop Box via the Course Menu and click on the Students folder.

Click on the file to either download or view. Once reviewed AND if you have added the Gradebook or Post 'Em Tools (2 of Laulima's grade tools) you can enter the appropriate score and inform the student of the posted score.

Assignments:

Assignments tool allows instructors to create, distribute, collect, and grade online assignments.

Once the Assignments tool has been added to the course, click on Assignments in the Course Menu.

To add an assignment click on "Add".

Enter an assignment title, as well as use pull down menus for Open, Due and Accept Until dates.

Use the pull down menu for "Grade Scale" and choose Points…if associating the assignment to the Gradebook points must be selected.

Enter assignment instructions using the HTML editor.

Check the box for "Add honor pledge" (optional), IF the Gradebook tool was added the option for "Add Assignment to Gradebook" will be available. Click "Post" when done.

The assignment has been successfully added. Student now can enter their accounts and complete the exercise.

The following are student views of the Assignment Tool.

Students click on the assignment title.

Students review assignment information and can now create the assignment text and upload any assignment file.

To submit a file for grading, students click on "Add Attachments" button (their file should already be saved to their computer).

Click "Browse".

Locate the file, click once to select and click "Open".

To finalize the submission, click on "Continue".

Laulima confirms the submission, students click OK to return to Assignments.

The assignment Status says "Submitted".

Returning back to the instructor view of Assignments, once an assignment has been submitted the In/New column will indicate new assignments via a number (1/1), in this case 1 assignment is in and 1 assignment is new.

Click on the numbers.

The "Submitted" column indicated which student submitted something. Click on the students name to access to the submission (if all students submitted something you can choose "Download All" which will download all submissions as a .zip or compressed file that would need to be unzipped on your desktop).

Review any information the student typed in the HTML editor. You can enter comments/feedback directly within their message by surrounding your comments with double curly braces {{feedback here}}.

Click on the Submitted Attachments link to download the file.

Enter a score in the Grade box, click "Return Assignment to Student" or "Save". Return assignment to students will give them back their submitted file.

If you would like, select "Allow Resubmission" AND select "Return Assignment to Student" to allow them to continue working on the file and resubmit.

The Status column indicates the assignment has been "Returned" to the student and graded.
