Academic Intervention Graduate AssistantPosition

Position Purpose:

This position exists to provide students with resources for academic success, track academic progress, and apply retention strategies for MSUM students.

Job Description:

The Academic Intervention Graduate Assistant works with students on academic warning and probation. The graduate assistant will facilitate ongoing, individual meetings with students experiencing academic difficulties and will assist students in addressing issues that contribute to these difficulties. The graduate assistant willoffer guidance, encouragement and refer students to a variety of resources that will help them get back on track to being successful here at MSUM. The graduate assistant will maintain accurate, detailed records on contact attempts and student meetings and will also serve as a student representative on the Financial Aid and Academic Suspension Appeals Committee. The Graduate Assistant will work collaboratively with Student Relations Coordinators, Academic Advisors, Professors, and the tutoring program.

Responsibilities, tasks and performance indicators include:

  • Design, direct, and conduct weekly contract probation meetings tailored for individual students’ needs aimed toward overcoming barriers to academic success
  • Maintain working relationships with assigned students to maximize student achievement, retention, persistence, and educational goals
  • Facilitate use of student services, Mapworks, ISRS, ImageNow, GPA calculator, StudentLingo, and other academic planning resources, programs, and policies to give accurate information to current/returning students
  • Use Mapworks to document interactions with students
  • Review referrals and assist with connecting students with the appropriate resource(s) and address concerns expressed by the referrer
  • Accurately input end of term stats into an excel spreadsheet along with tracking student meeting requirements
  • Attend Academic Support/Advising Group committee meetings, ASC staff meetings, town hall meetings, and other campus events
  • Assist with intervention strategies as needed

Qualifications:

  • Must be available 20hours per week
  • Must beadmitted in full standing to an MSUM graduate program and maintain a 3.0 graduate GPA; admittance in Counseling and Student Affairs preferred.
  • Must have good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
