In the matter of widow’s Pension claim #291935 Sarah J. Riley Widow of Thadus J. Rily late of Co. “C” 2d & 99 - Pa. Vol. On this 19th day of July A.D. 1886 personally appeared before me an alderman in and for the said County duly authorized to administer oaths Sarah J. Riley aged 46 years, a resident of Altoona in the County of Blair and State of Pennsylvania whose Post Office address is 1323 8th Avenue Altoona Blair County Pa. […] declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: that she the claimant had children by the soldier Thadus J. Rily. Their names and dates of birth are as follows. Paxton C. Riley born December 13th 1859 Don E. Riley born June the 8th 1862 Died November 12th 1862. No other children were had by the claimant to the said soldier.

Thaddeus Riley, a Corpl. of Company “C”, 2d Regiment Penn. Volunteers, was enrolled on the 18 day of April, 1861, at St. Thomas Penn, for 3 mos., and was mustered our with Company July 26th1861 at Harrisburg, Penn. Return for May 1861, does not report him among the absent enlisted men Books of Organization, not on file in this office. The name Thaddeus S. Riley not borne on Rolls of said Co. on file in this Office. Muster in and Muster out Rolls only records on file.

DECLARATION FOR ORIGINAL PENSION OF A WIDOW

22 June 1880, Sarah Jane Riley, age 40 years, appeared before Associate Judge of Common Pleas Court of Blair County, declared that she is the widow of Thaddeus S. Riley, who contracted disease of the lungs from which he suffered until his death and who died on the 29thof November, A.D. 1878, that she was married under the name of Sarah Jane Wister to said Thaddeus S. Riley on the 3rdday of May A.D. 1859, by Rev. Thomas Apple at Greencastle, Pa. No legitimate children yet surviving. Her residence is 8thAve. between 13th & 14thStreets, and that her post office address is Altoona Blair County Penna.

The attached paper was surrendered to the Commissioner of Pensions on January 16, 1912, by Miss Ruth E. Skinner, daughter of Charles L. Skinner, disbarred pension attorney of Baltimore, Maryland, who died on December 13, 1911, and was found among his effects.

Thaddeus S. Riley, a Private of Captain Charles P. Clark’s Company “F” 99thRegiment of Pa. Veteran Volunteers, who was enrolled on the 22ndday of February 1865 to serve one year […] is hereby Discharged this first day of July 1865, at Washington, District of Columbia by reason of Special Order No 158 Hd. *** A of P (No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist.)

Said Thaddeus S. Riley was born in Franklin County Pennsylvania, is 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, Blue eyes, Brown hair, and by occupation when enrolled a Coach Maker. Given at Washington, D.C., this First day of July 1865.

The bearer hereof Thaddeus S. Reilly, Corporal in Capt. James G. Elder’s Company “C” 2d Regt Pa Vols, aged 23 years, 5 ft 10 in. high light complexion gray eyes and light hair, and by profession a Dry Goods Merchant, born in Fayetteville, Franklin County, Pa., and enlisted at Harrisburg Pa on the 20thday of April A.D. 1861 is hereby permitted to go to Greencastle, Franklin County Pa a furlough having been granted him from Monday May 27, 1861 to Wednesday May 29, 1861 at 6 oclock PM. at which period he will rejoin his Company at Camp Scott or wherever it may then be, or be considered a deserter.

GENERAL AFFIDAVIT

Third of March, A.D. 1882, appeared Hamilton V. Hartman, aged 46 years, resident of Greencastle, Franklin County, Pennsylvania […] who being duly sworn declare in relation to the aforesaid case as follows that he knew Thaddeus S. Riley Twenty Three years “I always thought he was a healthy man before he went into the Army in 1861 after he came home from the Army he complained of having the Rheumatism, he never appeared well from that time. he had a hacking cough, he told me frequently that he took cold from exposure in the army.
