ABOVEGROUND HYDRONIC PIPING

PART - GENERAL

SUMMARY

Section Includes: Include labor, material, equipment, and accessories necessary to furnish and install heating hot water supply and return piping, chilled water supply and return piping, condenser water supply and return piping, pool heating supply and return piping, modifications to existing piping, and condensate piping and make connections to equipment as called for in Part3 of this Section and as shown on Drawings.

SUBMITTALS

Test Results of Existing Systems: Submit test results of water solution for existing hydronic systems before making any connections to the existing system. After completing new work, restore the existing system back to the same condition as noted in the pretest condition.

All castings used for coupling housings, fittings, valve bodies, and other components shall be date stamped for quality assurance and traceability.

Manufacturer Qualifications: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of hydronic piping products of types, materials, and sizes required, whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar service for not less than 10years.

Installer Qualifications: Firm with at least 10years of successful installation experience on projects with hydronic piping work similar to that required for Project.

ASME Compliance: Fabricate and install hydronic piping in accordance with ASME B31.9 "Building Services Piping".

PART - PRODUCTS

MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS

General: Provide piping materials and factoryfabricated piping products of sizes, types, pressure ratings, temperature ratings, and capacities as indicated. Where not indicated, provide proper selection as determined by installer in accordance with installation requirements. Provide materials and products in accordance with ASME B31.9 Code for Building Services Piping where applicable, base pressure rating on hydronic piping systems maximum design pressures. Provide sizes and types matching piping and equipment connections; provide fittings of materials, which match pipe materials used in hydronic piping systems. Where more than one type of materials or products are indicated, selection is installer's option.

BASIC IDENTIFICATION

General: Provide identification in accordance with Section 230553, Identification for HVAC Piping and Equipment, in accordance with the following listing:

Hydronic Valves: Brass Valve Tags

SUPPLY AND RETURN PIPING

General Requirements: Supply and return piping shall be standard weight black steel pipe or steel Schedule40, except that piping in ground shall be steel pipe with welded joints or may be wrought iron pipe. Underground piping and fittings shall be coated with Encoat extruded thermoplastic polyolefin resin (polyethylene), applied over a modified rubber/asphalt mastic. Fittings shall be standard weight steel.

Pipe Size 2Inches and Smaller: Black steel pipe, Schedule40, Class125 castiron fittings with threaded joints.

Tube Size 3Inches and Smaller: Copper tube, TypeL, harddrawn temper; wroughtcopper fittings with soldered joints.

Pipe Size 21/2Inches and Larger: Black steel pipe, Schedule40, wroughtsteel longsweep buttwelding fittings with welded joints or grooved couplings/fittings.

Make joints on copper tubing using 955 silver solder, with pipe and fitting brought to required temperature in accordance with solder manufacturer's recommendations. CPtoIPS connection at a threaded joint may be made with 955 solder.

Use dielectric fitting when dissimilar metals are connected. Use Dielectric couplings and Dielectric nipples in place of Dielectric union. Dielectric unions are not allowed.

When welding either use Backing Rings exclusively or eliminate all together.

Mechanically grooved piping is acceptable under the following conditions for new construction. Acceptable manufacturer is Victaulic or approved others that can meet the following requirements. No exceptions.

When grooving, the grooved coupling manufacturer’s (the “manufacturer”) factory trained representative shall provide on-site training for contractor’s field personnel in the use of grooving tools, application of groove, and installation of grooved joint products. This shall be at the expense of the installing contractor.

A.  IACET/Training:

(1)  A factory trained manufacturer’s representative (direct employee) shall provide on-site training for contractor’s field personnel in the use of grooving tools, application of groove, and product installation in compliance with the following:

a.  Manufacturer must be accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).

b.  Manufacturer must demonstrate that it complies with the ANSI/IACET standards which is recognized as a standard of good practice.

B.  Inspection:

(1)  A manufacturer’s factory trained representative shall periodically visit the job site and review the installation for best practices. This shall be at the expense of the installing contractor. The installing contractor shall correct any identified deficiencies.

(2)  Product that has been examined and has not met the visual inspection criteria for proper installation must be corrected and re-examined prior to the completion of the project. Any product that has not been corrected or was not examined will not be considered as part of the successful completion of the inspection.

C.  Application:

(1) Upon completion of the manufacturer’s inspection of the installation and any identified corrections, the manufacturer will provide the owner or purchaser with a thirty (30) year limited warranty on manufacturer’s products.

On mechanically grooved piping retro-fit projects, the following will apply:

A.  IACET/Training:

(1)  A factory trained manufacturer’s representative (direct employee) shall provide on-site training for contractor’s field personnel in the use of grooving tools, application of groove, and product installation in compliance with the following:

a.  Manufacturer must be accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).

b.  Manufacturer must demonstrate that it complies with the ANSI/IACET standard which is recognized as a standard of good practice.

B.  Application:

(1) The manufacturer will provide the owner or purchaser with an extended fifteen (15) year limited warranty on the manufacturer’s products without the requirement of inspections by the manufacturer’s representative.

Branch Piping: Branch piping 2inch IPS and larger shall be welded to main piping at least (2)pipe sizes larger, using WeldOLet fittings, in accordance with the following schedule:

Weld branch piping 11/2inch IPS and smaller to main piping not less than (2) pipe sizes larger than branch using shaped nipples welded into main. Make other branch connections with weld tees and make changes in direction with weld fittings. Close ends of piping and headers with standard weight weld cap fittings; flat steel plates are not acceptable. Use slipon weld flanges on straight run of pipe only. Use weld neck flanges wherever connection is made to weld fitting.

Inserts, Hangers, Anchors, and Supports: As called for in Section 230529, Hangers and Supports for HVAC Piping and Equipment.

Hydronic Specialties: As called for in Section 230530, Hydronic Specialties.

Basic Expansion Compensation: As called for in Section 230516, Expansion Fittings and Loops for HVAC Piping.

Basic Meter and Gauges: As called for in Section 230519, Meters and Gages for HVAC Piping.

CONDENSATE DRAIN PIPING

Indirect Waste Piping System: TypeM ridged copper tube pipe with wrought copper fittings, assembled with 955 solder or no lead solder.

ABS and PVC pipe and fittings are not acceptable.

For corrosive condensate, provide poly pipe up to neutralizing station.

Pool Heater Pipe: Supply and return piping between pool supply main, pool convertor, and recovery unit shall be NSF approved, Schedule80 CPVC pipe.

First 10feet on either side of water heater and recovery unit supply and return shall be TypeL copper. Remaining supply and return lines shall be Schedule80 CPVC, with solvent compatible with higher temperatures. Supply and return piping shall be Schedule 80 CPVC piping and fittings.

PART - EXECUTION

INSPECTION

General Requirements: Examine areas and conditions under which hydronic piping systems materials and products are to be installed. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in manner acceptable to installer.

CHEMICAL TREATMENT, ADJUSTING, AND CLEANING

General Requirements: Refer to requirements in Section 232500, HVAC Water Treatment.

PLACEMENT OF VALVES

General Requirements: Install valves in piping systems to isolate pieces of equipment and where indicated on Drawings. Refer to Section 230523.

PLACEMENT OF UNIONS

Connections: Install unions at piping connections to equipment, including all control valves.

INSTALLATION OF BASIC IDENTIFICATION

General Requirements: Install mechanical identification in accordance with Section 230553, Identification for HVAC Piping and Equipment.

INSTALLATION OF PIPING SPECIALTIES

General Requirements: Install piping specialties in accordance with Section 230530, Hydronic Specialties.

INSTALLATION OF ANCHORS:

General Requirements: Install anchors in accordance with Section 230529, Hangers and Supports for HVAC Piping and Equipment.

Contractor shall ascertain location of electrical panelboards and shall keep piping and ductwork out of area above panelboards and for a distance of 3'6" in front of and 1'6" from sides of panelboards. This includes all VAV box control panels.

Install piping with a 1/8inch per 10feet upward slope in the direction of water flow for drainage and air elimination.

Install eccentric reducers where pipe is reduced in size in direction of flow, with tops of both pipes and reducer flush.

Connect branchfeed piping to mains at 0to 90degrees above the horizontal center line of mains; connect runout piping to branches similarly.

Locate groups of pipes parallel to each other, spaced to permit applying full insulation and servicing of valves.

Start systems following a procedure that will remove all air.

All Automatic air vents shall be located in open and accessible locations.

Provide an air separator on the suction side of the system circulation pump and connect to the expansion tank.

Provide an Apollo Series 70 Ball Valve, with a hose connection or Owner approved equal, on strainers for blowdown.

Provide pump suction fittings on suction side of base mounted centrifugal pumps.

Provide ball valve, check valve, and flow station, to be used on the discharge side of the hot water heating and chilled water pumps, when VFD=s are used.

Support pump fittings with floor mounted pipe and flange supports.

Provide ball valves, on water inlets and outlets, to terminal heating units, such as fin tube radiation, cabinet and unit heaters, and fan coils, Apollo 70 Series Ball Valves, or Owner approved equal.

Provide balancing valves on the water outlet side, for terminal heating and cooling units.

Provide relief valves on pressure tanks, lowpressure side of reducing valves, heat exchangers, and expansion tanks.

Select system relief valve capacity so that it is greater than makeup pressure reducing valve capacity. Relief valve capacity to be sized by manufacturer or Engineer of Record.

Pressure Relief:

Manufacturers: Watts, Type 741 or 740, or equivalent by: Kunkle

AGA Z21.22 certified bronze body teflon seat, steel stem and springs, automatic, direct pressure actuated, sized for application.

Welding: Welding shall be done in accordance with current requirements of ASME code, by welders who have passed the current qualification test. Assemble piping smaller than 2inch IPS with screwed joints and cast iron fittings.

Threaded Pipe: Screwed joints shall have clean sharp threads cut into pipe ends; shall be reamed to full inside diameter of pipe, wiped clean of burrs and chips before assembly; and shall be assembled with minimum of pipe dope applied to male threads only, made up to recommended thread engagement and finished joint wiped clean of excess oil and dope.

Condensate Drain Piping: Contractor shall install condensate drain piping from humidifiers, fan coil units, heat pumps, spot coolers, air-to-air heat exchanger air handling units, unit ventilators, dedicated energy recovery units, vent stacks for non-condensing equipment, and air handlers to nearest floor drain in unfinished or exposed area. Condensate drain piping shall be trapped and pitched a minimum of 1/8inch per foot. No piping shall be less than 3/4inch in size. Trap outlet shall be offset lower than inlet (air handler side) to allow for proper draining of condensate. Refer to details and manufacturer=s recommendations.

For conditions with not enough height for trap with gravity flow, use condensate pump.

Control Equipment: Install control equipment as indicated and shown on Drawings. Refer to Section 230923 for equipment furnished by the Energy Management and Control System Contractor that needs to be installed by this Contractor.

Relief Valve Outlet Piping on Glycol Systems: A 1inch NPT glycol solution recovery line shall be piped in from the system pressure relief valve outlet to a 55gallon drum.

INSTALLATION OF VALVES

General Requirements: Install valves in accordance with Section 230523, GeneralDuty Valves for HVAC Piping.

Sectional Valves: Install on each branch and riser, close to main, where branch or riser serves (2) or more hydronic terminals or equipment connections, and elsewhere as indicated.
