ABORIGINAL FAMILY SUPPORT ASSISTANT

PERMANENT/PART TIME

Salary: 20 weekly @ $14.92 per hour

The Odawa Native Friendship Centre wishes to employ on a permanent/part time basis, 20 hours per week an Aboriginal Family Assistant/Child Advocate. The applicant will be responsible for assisting the Aboriginal Family Support coordinator in providing support to children (0 -6 years) and their families through the provisions of holistic healing and preventative services. The Family Support Assistant will be responsible for program delivery of child development and recreation. To develop, maintain and direct various programs to meet the diverse client and community needs. Under direct supervision of the Aboriginal Support Coordinator, the Aboriginal Family Support Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Organizing and facilitating age appropriate children’s activities in the Play-lodge
  • Plan and implement play lodge schedule, working in conjunction with coordinator to complement adult activities
  • Reinforce positive parenting skills with parents
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and Aboriginal beliefs, values and traditions that enhance AFSP
  • Prepare room for activity at beginning of program session
  • Preparing a healthy snack for children before each scheduled activity in the Play-lodge
  • Maintaining a clean and safe environment for the children in the Play-lodge and kitchen
  • Report any concerns regarding parents/children to the Family Support Coordinator
  • Encourage use of the toy lending library
  • Plan and organize the clothing bank as needed
  • Maintain a list of aboriginal and mainstream resources in the community
  • Maintain records, mailing list and statistical information
  • Notify parents of upcoming workshop, special events and field trips
  • Perform clerical duties (i.e. faxing, photocopying, making posters etc.)
  • Assist in promoting and advertising the Family Support Program
  • Assist in special events as required (e.g. family socials, powwows, seasonal ceremonies, Odawa events etc.)
  • Maintain confidentiality of clients at all times
  • Other misc. duties as they occur

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Aboriginal culture differences and general lifestyles of Aboriginal people
  • High School or College relevant education and/or two years experience in the child programming (ECE)
  • Strong ability to work flexible hours; i.e. evenings, weekends
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational and file management skills
  • Criminal record check
  • Strong computer skills
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Drivers License Class G an asset
