ABORIGINAL APPRENTICE COACH PROGRAM
Application Procedure
For a coach to be considered for the Canada Games – Aboriginal Apprentice Coach Program, the Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) is to follow the application procedure outlined below.
STEP 1– CANDIDATE APPLICATION FORM
The Apprentice Coach Candidate must submit the completed Candidate Application Form and the required attachments to their respective PSO.
STEP 2– PROVINCIAL SPORT ORGANIZATION APPLICATION FORM
The PSOselectsONE candidate it will endorse and completes the PSO Application Form and a letter of recommendation which includes the following:
- How the PSO would benefit from participating in the project.
- Who the mentor coach will be,their NCCP certification level and previous coach experience.
- A brief outline of the training and development opportunitiesleading up to and at the Canada Games that the Apprentice Coach will be involved with including:
- Schedule of Activity/Event (location and dates).
- Role of Apprentice Coach in each Activity/Event.
- Plan for Apprentice Coach to increase their level of NCCP to a minimum of within one year following the Games. Competition – Development Trained.
- Projected Costs and PSO’s Financial Contribution to the Project.
NOTE: Costs related to the participation in the Professional Development Seminars, e.g. transportation, accommodation, will be subsidized by the Alberta Sport Connection (ASC).
- How the PSO will continue involving the apprentice coach in provincial activities on a regular basis following the completion of the project.
STEP 3 – PROVINCIAL SPORT ASSOCIATION SUBMITS TO ASC
The PSO submits bothcompleted Application Forms and required attachments as outlined in Steps 1 and 2 to:

The ASC will review the submissions received from the Provincial Sport Organizations and select two candidates to fill the number of positions permitted. AnAboriginal Apprentice Coach Program Agreement will be established with the successful PSOs, Apprentice Coach and the ASC.

ABORIGINAL APPRENTICE COACH PROGRAM
Guidelines
- Only two aboriginal coaches from each province and territory will be selected.
- The apprentice coach must be ofAboriginal ancestry – “aboriginal ancestry” is defined by the Aboriginal Sport Circle as anyone of First Nation (status and non-status Indian), Metis or Inuit ancestry.
- Canadian citizen or landed immigrant status.
- The apprentice coach must be “In Training” or “Trained” status in the NCCP Competition – Introduction context, “In Training” status in the Competition-Development context or NCCP Level I Certified. Transitioning athletes are eligible to apply but NCCP training prior to the Games is a requirement. Coaches who are Level 3 certified or NCCP Competition – Development Trained or certified are not eligible for the Program as these coaches have already obtained the necessary certification to coach at the Canada Games. Any exceptions to NCCP requirements must be approved by the Provincial/Territorial Coaching Representative before a coach can be admitted into the Aboriginal Apprentice Coach Program.
- The apprentice coach must have completed some form of NCCP training.
- The apprentice coach must meet Canada Games eligibility and residency guidelines for coaches.
- The apprentice coach must be committed to the objectives and requirements of the program.
- The apprentice coach is to be involved with the Canada Games coaching staff and team (i.e. athlete selection and training activities) leading up to and including the Canada Games.
- The apprentice coach must not have attended the Canada Games as a “Coach”.
- The apprentice coach must not have attended Olympics or Paralympic Games, PanAmerican Games or Parapan, or Commonwealth Gamesas a “Coach”.
- The apprentice coach has demonstrated potential through development and commitment to the sport.
- The Provincial Sport Organization ensures an appropriate mentor coach (either a member of the Games coaching staff or a non-staff mentor) is assigned to the apprentice coach.
- The apprentice coach should be available to attend a series of Professional Development Seminars(1st PD session: April - May, 2018 TBC, 2nd PD session: November 2018, 2018 Petro Canada Sport Leadership, Ottawa) with the other provincial/territorial apprentice coaches.
- The Mentor Coach is encouraged to attend the second Professional Development Seminar.
- Trained in the Aboriginal Coaching Modules. Coaches who are not already trained in the modules may be admitted to the program, but will be required to complete the training before attending the Canada Games.
