2010 ABN AMRO Men’s Champions Trophy

Australia – Spain(Saturday 07 Aug 2010 – 17:00)

ABN AMRO Champions Trophy Head-to-heads

There have been 21 previous encounters between Australia and Spain in the Champions Trophy. Australia have won 13, Spain have won three and there have been five draws.

> Their most recent meeting in this competition, in Melbourne in 2009, resulted in a 10-3 victory for the Kookaburras. It marked the first time in Champions Trophy history that a team had scored at least 10 goals in a match.

> Four Australians scored a brace in that match: Fergus Kavanagh, Glenn Turner, Luke Doerner and Grant Schubert. Jamie Dwyer and Eddie Ockenden also netted for the Kookaburras.

> The meeting that preceded that was the 2008 Gold Medal match in Rotterdam, which Australia won 4-1.

> The last time Spain defeated Australia in the CT was in Kuala Lumpur in 2007, when Spain triumphed 3-2. Santi Freixa scored twice in that match.

> These teams also met at the FIH World Cup in New Delhi last March. Australia won 2-0.

> That match was a taste of revenge for the Kookaburras after losing 3-2 against Spain in the Olympic semifinals in Beijing. A Santi Freixa PC goal two minutes from the end dethroned the titleholders.

Australia

Since 1992, there has been a final match on the final Sunday. On only four of 18 occasions, the team that won the group failed to win the final. This has happened twice to Australia (1992 and 1997).

Australia remain perfect in this CT. The last team that won all of their five CT group matches were Germany in 2001 in Rotterdam. The only time Australia achieved this was in 1997 in Adelaide. Australia need to beat Spain on Saturday to match this performance.

> With their sixth successive match won in the Champions Trophy, Australia have equalled their record for the competition, which was established only recently (2008-2009). The record for most consecutive CT matches won by any team is 11 by Pakistan (1978-1981).

> The Kookaburras have won nine of their 10 CT matches with Ric Charlesworth in charge, outscoring the opposition 50-19 in those 10 matches.

> Nathan Burgers, Fergus Kavanagh and Des Abbott must be on the winning side on Sunday to equal West Germany’s Michael Metz (1986-1988) as the only players to win the Champions Trophy in each of their first three participations.

Australia are assured of collecting their 25th CT medal, further extending the record for the competition.Australia have won the Champions Trophy a record 10 times and are looking to make it 11 trophies here.

Australia are aiming to win the Champions Trophy three years in a row. Only Australia themselves (1983-1985) and West Germany (1986-1988) have previously achieved this feat.

> The record for most goals scored in a CT group phase consisting of five matches is 25 by Australia in Amstelveen in 2003. Australia scored 24 times in the group phase last year. They are on 21 this year with one match to go.

Australia’s success rate in the penalty corner department in Monchengladbach lies at 26% (5-for-19).

Spain

To reach the final, Spain must beat Australia and hope that Germany fail to beat Netherlands. Any other series of results will see Spain contesting another match than the final on Sunday.

Spain’s Pau Quemada joins Australia’s Luke Doerner and Jamie Dwyer as the tournament’s top scorers on four goals.

Spain are undefeated in three successive CT matches for the first time since 2008, when they reached the final in Rotterdam.

Spain are the most effective side in the penalty corner department in Monchengladbach. Their average for this tournament is 38% (6-for-16).
