Appendix D:Art to Wear Subcommittee Report from Mike Quante

Subcommittee: Mary Brannon, Carly Spano, Heidi Woodacre, and Mike Quante

Interest in ways AATCC could support colleges (and student designers) to put on fashion shows were explored at last fall’s AATCC C2C committee meeting. By seeking out and supporting these shows, AATCC would benefit by gaining exposure and potentially, new C2C oriented members. A proposal was made for AATCC to cosponsor NCSU’s 10th Anniversary 2011 Art to Wear Fashion Show to explore this concept, and for the AATCC Publications Department to highlight this show, as well as other active college fashion programs, in AATCC media.

Support for 2011 Art to Wear consisted of:

  • A $2,000 contribution by AATCC to help cover show production costs
  • Articles in the March-April 2011 AATCC Review and March 1, 2011 AATCC News newsletter promoting the show
  • Providing suggestions for an event judge
  • AATCC Press Release
  • AATCC social media coverage (Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter)
  • Student designers receiving free one-year AATCC student memberships

AATCC benefitted from its sponsorship with:

  • AATCC booth as part of Art to Wear’s first Design Showcase exhibit
  • AATCC logo displayed on the Art to Wear website and in media viewed by the audience on show day
  • Opportunity to reach out to student fashion designers and their current or prospective schools

In addition, five additional articles in AATCC News from March through May 2011 covered college fashion shows at Central Michigan University, Cornell, FIDM, NCSU, Oregon State, Philadelphia University, Purdue, University of Minnesota, University of Rhode Island, and Washington State. Some responded to a call in AATCC Review for those involved in student fashion shows to be interviewed.

North Carolina State University student-run fashion show, Art to Wear, attracted over 3,900 students in celebration of ten years of awe-inspiring fashion. Thirteen designers, mainly College of Design and College of Textile students, presented collections that dazzled and astonished the crowd in Reynolds Coliseum. The collections were covered by The News and Observer, Fibre2Fashion, ABC News, Fiber Arts Magazine, The Kansas City Star, Textile World, and Worth Global Style Network. The students collected over US$25,000 through fundraising efforts such as merchandise and ticketsales, the Design Showcase, and generous sponsors. There were fifteen key sponsors, including AATCC, Sunbrella, and VF Jeanswear.
