Show students the cover of the book. Ask a student why it won a medal. When they answer go ahead and record their comment and show how students can replay the comment from the board.
Show them the record button.
Ask a student what they think the book will be about and record their answer.
Go through the first couple pages of the VoiceThread and have a student comment on each page or answer the question.
Finish reading the book with the class and have them comment on the last page.
Ask them what they noticed about the book (ie that it was a wordless book). Tell students they are going to look at wordless books together at their table and then come to the computer to make more comments about their book.
If you have helpers set each helper at a computer and let them help students in recording their thoughts.
If it is just you just use two computers and have one of the really responsible, focused 1st graders help on the second computer.
Computers will need to be apart from one another so that they don’t overlap on the recording.

Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?
Show the video of Kevin Henkes who won a Caldecott for Kitten’s First Full Moon. I would just show the first 2 minutes 15 seconds.
Show students where a Kevin Henkes book would be found in the library. Where would we go if we wanted to find a book about the moon? Nonfiction section!
Tell students they are going to learn how to find a book in the nonfiction section today. Show students an example of an appropriate nonfiction book (ie one that has a red dot to label it as easy to read).
Have students practice using shelf markers!
Sing EITHER the Shelf Marker song OR the If you want to read Nonfiction look this way song.
Skip Shelf Marker Hokey Pokey for PREK!!!
Sing Shelf Marker Hokey-Pokey!
After discussing the importance of shelf markers and how to use them, sing The Shelf Marker Song. Sing to the tune of The Hokey Pokey.
You put your shelf marker in.
(Put right hand and arm forward.)
You pull a book right out.
(Pull right hand and arm back.)
You look through the pages, to see what it's about.
(Touch sides of hands together like and open book. Left hand closes on top of right hand and then back open like you are turning the pages of the book.)
You do the bookey lookey, And you see if it's just right.
(Continue to hold hands like an open book.)
That's what it's all about!
(Slap hand on thighs twice, clap hand twice, open hand on the word about.)
You do the bookey lookey,
(Hold hands in the air and shake them like the hand motion in the Hokey Pokey.)

Students will read at the table while waiting to look at appropriate nonfiction books. Call one table at a time to look at nonfiction section. Students reading at the table should be looking for books that they would recommend to be Caldecott winners!

Read My Friend Rabbit. Reinforce the Caldecott books.
Have students comment on the VoiceThread about which book they liked best and why!
Show students airplane craft activity.
Allow students to color airplane pieces while waiting for teacher to glue pieces together with hot glue gun.
Glue the pieces next to your computer and if students are waiting for you to glue have them comment on the voice thread about which book they liked best and why!
