The human who can be so constructive or destructive this is important, important for the continuance of the human species so that they do not ignorantly destroy that which feeds them.

Destructive – agriculture (artificial fertilizer, soil compaction, irrigation systems and dams)

How can we farm crops without being so destructive to the environment?

Our greatest challenge is to green existing buildings.

Green efforts on buildings involve water use, electricity and other energy use

Through super smart windows to reduce heat loss/gain but maintain effective natural light, and more efficient chiller/heater systems

Example: Byron G. Rogers – Federal Office Building

-Historic building – Built in 1964

-

-Retrofit should reduce up to 70% of existing energy use

-Will put them ahead by 5-10 years on goal of Net Zero by 2030

Major inefficiency in this country comes from transmission of energy/power from the source to the consumer – 90%!!?? Waste

Efficiency therefor will become more about localized production through smaller grids and more localized renewable power sources such as solar/wind

“Old buildings can be better than new one” – from text pg. 70

What changes can we do to make our homes more energy efficient?

Concept of focusing on individual residents instead of management/ownership for large rental properties

“We Must Have Total Transparency.” By Lee Eng Lock coming from his campaign call

– Energy consumption readings being taken cannot be trusted;

– Correct tools are needed if accurate measurements are to be made;

– Wrong data leads to wrong decisions;

– There is too much acceptance of lower standards;

– Data must be shared; and

– Admission of mistakes must happen in order for lessons to be learnt

Activity:

How can we improve energy efficiency at ______? Categories: (Work, school, and home)

Groups are (1-3 work); (4-6 school); (7-10 home)

10-15 minutes of discussion in groups about ideas that have or could be done on your subject.

Send two representatives to write down 3-5 ideas under each category.

Which are the easiest to achieve; is it cost effective; what is possible for all or just for each;

Little – insulate water heater, turn down water heater temp. (Most do not use the extremely hot water so why heat it so high), darker thicker window curtains, hang clothes outside to dry instead of using a dryer, close heat/air vents in rooms not in use, anymore?

Big – replace windows with energy efficient windows, Energy star appliances, better rated insulation in walls and ceilings, anymore?
