Spread of Infection Longer Project QWC;Revise

Remember

  • A virus that spreads easily can be prevented from doing so

Seasonal influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus shown in the photograph. Symptoms include a fever, feeling hot and cold, sore throat, aching muscles, headaches and feeling tired and debilitated.

Flu is spread by water droplet infection when people sneeze, cough or even talk, and less often it can be spread by people touching contaminated surfaces.

In 2009−10 a new pandemic flu known as 2009H1N1 caused thousands of people around the world to become ill. The young and elderly are particularly at risk from flu and it is recommended that young children and people older than 65 years should get vaccinated against the flu.

Task:

It is your task to produce a Health Awareness Campaign in school to make teachers aware of the importance of vaccination as a method of reducing outbreaks of the virus. Your campaign should include the following:

  • how to reduce the spread of the influenza virus
  • how vaccination prevents those at risk from falling ill;explain the roles of white blood cells, antibodies and antitoxins.

Produce your work as a storyboard using speech bubbles to insert the lines the actors must speak.

Your storyboard should:

  • show a minimum of three scenes, sketching out the roles of the actors
  • display the way in which the infection is spread
  • show a member of the public being vaccinated
  • explain how a vaccine works by producing antibodies
  • explain the benefits and risks of immunisation
  • explain why antibiotics would not be effective but antivirals would.

Lastly, imagine that you are the school nurse administering the vaccine to staff. Write a 50- word script for the nurse to explain to the staff the importance of vaccination.

Your campaign should be informative and use scientific terms communicating the facts in a clear and understandable way, including using visual aids where appropriate.

Grades / You should:
E,D,C /
  • state that a virus is a type of pathogen
  • recall how diseases spread and how this can be prevented
  • recall that immunization gives protection against certain pathogens
  • describe how pathogens are destroyed by the body’s immune system

C,B /
  • explain how pathogens cause the symptoms of a disease
  • explain how antibodies fight pathogens
  • recall the difference between antibiotics and antiviral drugs

A,A* /
  • explain why each pathogen need a specific, unique antibodies
  • explain the process of immunisation
  • describe the benefits and risks of immunization
