Getting behind the wheel can be thrilling. Take a few minutes to ensure everything is in good working order before you set off.

What you’ll need:

  • Gloves
  • Tyre pressure gauge
  • Screen wash

Here’s what you’ll need;a pair of gloves, a tyre pressure gauge and screen wash.

1 – Warning lights

The screen transitions to a shot of a car from the driver’s point of view. We see the driver – who is wearing thick grey gloves– place their hands on the steering wheel. The driver puts the key in the ignition. The camera zooms in on the dashboard, and lights flicker across it.

From inside the car, turn on the ignition and check that all the warning lights go off after a few seconds.

2 – Wipers

[Visual transition/change]

The screen transitions back to the car from the driver’s point of view. With one hand on the wheel, the driver turns on the windscreen wipers, which move from side to side. The screen then shows the car from the outside, where the driver lifts the left wiper, running their finger up and down the wiper blade and then placing it back down. The driver then does the same with the other windscreen wiper.

Make sure the windscreen wipers are working properly. One wiper at a time, run your finger down the wiper blade to check they are in good condition. Don’t forget the rear wiper.

The driver then opens the car bonnet and opens the lid of the washer-fluid container. The driver then pours a bottle labeled ‘Shell All Seasons Screenwash’ into it.

Also make sure the window washer fluid is topped up with pre-mixed screen wash or if you have a concentrate, this will need to be combined with water.

3 – Windscreen

The screen transitions to thecar in the white-walled workshop. A red worktop and various tools and materials can be seen in the background. The camera is close to the windscreen of the red car, and the driver runs their gloved hand up and down the windscreen repeatedly.

Check the windscreen

Look over the windscreen for chips and cracks. Chips can be easily fixed and are often fixed for free or for a small fee through your insurance company.

4 – Lights

[Visual transition/change]

The screen shows the red car from the front in the workshop, and one after the other the headlights, dipped headlights, full beam, front indicators, front hazards, front fog lamps, backlights, brake lights, rear indicators, rear hazards and reverse lights are turned on and off. The camera gradually zooms in and out on the relevant lights on both the front and back of the vehicle.

You might need someone to help youcheck that all lights are working. Make sure you check headlights dipped and full beam, front indicators, front hazards, front fog lamps, backlights, brake lights, rear indicators, rear hazards, and reverse lights.

5 – Tyres

The screen transitions back to the workshop, where the camera quickly pans across the left side of the red car, and zooms in on the front left wheel. The driver feels around both sides of the wheel with both hands, and then feels the pressure on the top and each side of the tyre, before feeling around the entirety of it once more. The camera then zooms in further on the tyre valve, which the driver unscrews with their right hand. The driver then attaches the tyre pressure gauge and watches the screen.

Go around each tyre and check if they are in good condition.Check the tyres for any cracks or splits and make surethe tyre’s tread is legal, minimum 1.6 millimeters. Also make sure the tyre pressure is correct.

Check the spare tyre

[Visual transition/change]

The screen transitions onto the open boot of the car, and the driver removes the spare tyre from it and places it on the floor. In the same manner as before, the driver uses the tyre pressure gauge to check the pressure of the spare tyre, before placing it back in the boot of the car, along with a tyre wrench, jack, locking wheel nut and triangle. The driver then closes the boot.

Make sure to check the spare tyre pressure as well.

Whilst you’re there take a moment to check that the tyre wrench, jack, the locking wheel nut and triangle, if you have them, are all present and in working order.

6 – Emergency Essentials

The screen transitions onto a close up of the car’s glovebox. The driver opens the glovebox, revealing a high-vis garment and a first aid kit. The driver removes the first aid kit and the camera focuses on it.

It’s a good idea to keep a well-stocked first aid kit in the car. Check where it is and that it’s up to date.

The driver then removes the high-vis vest from the glovebox before holding it in front of the camera. The driver then places the high-vis vest followed by the first aid kit back in the glovebox, then closes it.

We also recommend having a high-visibility vestin case you have a flat tyre or your car breaks down.

7 – Seatbelts

The screen returns to the inside of the car, this time focusing on the driver’s seat seatbelt. Using both hands, the driver pulls the seatbelt down to ensure it is working correctly. The driver then checks all aspects of it are secure, and clicks it into place.

Before they’re put to the test, give the seatbelts a good check over. Check the belts’ condition and that they click into place securely.

8 – Under the car

[Visual transition/change]

The screen transitions to a shot of the rear of the red car. The driver puts their hands on the ground as if to slide underneath the car, and the camera zooms in underneath the vehicle. From the perspective of the driver, we see the underneath of the car. The driver then emerges out from underneath it, before returning to the front seat of the car and switching on the engine.

Check under the car to make sure there is nothing attached to the bottom. Doing these checks every few weeks, will keepyour car in the best condition.
