Top tips to prevent being a victim of crime:
Thefts of and from vehicles are a very common offence, especially when belongings are left in the vehicle:
•ALWAYS Lock the doors, windows, sunroof and boot EVERY time you leave your vehicle.

•Do not leave any belongings in your vehicle, even in the glove box. Criminals will break into a vehicle on an opportunist basis, don’t tempt them!

•ALWAYS try to park in a well-lit busy open area or on a car park that is well supervised, has restricted entry and exit points, good lighting and other security features.

  • Security mark your stereo or satellite navigation, notes the serial number and takes it with you.
  • If your car has an alarm fitted, turn it on EVERY time you park.
  • Etch the car’s registration number on all glass surfaces, windows, lights, sunroof etc.
  • Consider fitting a vehicle immobiliser device and use it EVERY time you park
  • Store keys in a lockable cupboard or in a drawer within your property. Once you’ve decided on a safe place for your keys, always use it so you can locate them in an emergency

Bicycles

  • Always lock your bicycle, even if you are leaving it for a couple of minutes
  • Avoid parking your bike in isolated and/or dimly lit places – leave your bike where a potential offender can easily be seen.
  • Get a good bike lock. Hardened steel D-Shaped locks are recommended as the minimum standard.
  • Lock your bike to an immovable object – use a bike rack or robust street furniture such as a lamppost.
  • Have your bike security marked or engraved.
  • Motorbikes
  • Always lock your bike and set the alarm if you have one.
  • Consider having a ‘Thatcham’ or ‘Sold Secure’ – approved electronic immobiliser professionally fitted to your bike.
  • Always put the steering lock on.
  • Wherever possible avoid leaving your helmet and other possessions on the bike.
  • Have your motorbike marked with its vehicle identification number (VIN).

In the week ‘s crime report garages and garden sheds have been targeted

Invest in an alarm for your garage or shed if you haven’t already done so.

  • Fit a good quality lock on the shed door, the fittings should be bolted through the door of the shed and reinforced at the back with a steel plate. Install a low cost; battery operated shed alarm on all outbuildings. These can be purchased from DIY stores. Windows on outbuildings can be protected with glass alarms.
  • Fit padlocks to all gates and shed doors. Use a closed shackle padlock not less than 2.5 inches in width, made of hardened steel with no less than 5 pins, standard padlocks can be forced with bolt cutters
  • Consider marking the property with your postcode using a ultra-violet marker pen or more advanced kits e.g. etching and engraving. Take photographs of any valuable property, this can be useful for identifying and providing proof of ownership for recovered property
  • Make your outdoor buildings visible from a window of your home and if possible, hidden from the public to help deter criminals.

In this weekly crime report, businesses have also been targeted:

  • Make sure you have CCTC installed covering as many windows and doors as possible, and make sure it is in working order.
  • Use posters to advertise the fact that the CCTV records 24 hours a day
  • Consider installing an alarm that is connected to a central monitoring station
  • Consider motion activated lighting inside and outside the premise
  • Make sure that the external perimeter of your premises is secure.

In the week shown, there has been 1 burglary in dwellings

•ALWAYS keep you doors Locked, even when you are in the house.

  • Windows – Fit and use window locks on all ground floor/vulnerable windows. Consider laminated glass and/or glass alarms for vulnerable windows. If replacing windows consider the security standard.
  • Security lights - particularly at the side and rear of the house, deter intruders and promote surveillance.
  • Don’t help the burglar - Chain ladders and wheelie bins to a solid post away from the house and lock all garden tools away.
  • Fit a burglar alarm – Always use an installer who is registered with NSI or SSAIB.
  • Property Marking - This can deter the offender by making stolen property harder to sell. Always put up stickers to advertise that property is marked.
  • Stop Chain Check - when you answer the door. Fit and use a door viewer and a door chain and don’t let strangers in until you are sure of their identity.

It is also important to note that even in hot weather, that open windows in cars or your house windows, are a temptation for burglars. Please make sure you keep your windows closed when you park your car or when you are vacant from your house to help prevent crime.
To help protect your belongings, whether household or business, register your property for free at , this will mean that is your property is stolen; you have a higher chance of getting it back!
