a.Taken from University of Western Sydney’s web site

We are enterprising and forward-looking and committed to access and equity in higher education. UWS is a major urban university spread over six campuses in GreaterWestern Sydney, a region of great opportunity, diversity, challenge and growth. The University shares many of the characteristics of the region, as we closely identify and work with local communities and businesses. We put knowledge to work in the education of our students for employment, in the application of research to contemporary problems, and in mutually enriching partnerships with communities.

b.From James Joyce’s Ulysses

Solemnly he came forward and mounts the round gunrest. He faces about and blessed gravely thrice the tower, the surrounding country and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he will bend towards him and make rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Deadalus, displeased and sleepy, leans his arms on the top of the staircase and looks coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak.

c.From the State Library of Victoria web site

The idea to build a bonzer public library was generated by a ridiculously small group of prominent big wigs who were concerned about the shitfight caused by the goldrush and were keen as mustard to foster the development of cultural institutions in their young city. These institutions, they believed, would provide access to ‘useful knowledge’ which in turn would create a stable society and assist the development of the colony. This was especially important at a time when there was great social upheaval caused by the goldrush.

d.From Apostrophe Protection Society web site

For all intents and purposes, John Richards spent most of his working life in journalism - about three quarter’s of it as a reporter and the remaining quarter as a sub editor. His task in the latter job of work really was to prepare reporters' copy for insertion into the paper. This actually involved tightening the story if it needed it, changing clumsy styles and mannerisms of phrasing and cutting down to length (each story is fitted into a page rather like a jigsaw). An important part, however, was correcting and fixing and repairing grammatical errors and, in particular, adding, deleting or moving apostrophe’s. Basically, it constantly amazed him how often reporters, especially the younger ones, seemed fundamentally to have no idea of the correct use of this very useful little device.
