SHATTERED: Chapter 9 & 10

Chapter Nine:

1.  Once again, this chapter takes place at The Club. Ian spends some time describing the Church Ladies who have come to help.

a.  Summarize his description of the Church Ladies.

b.  What kind sarcastic things does he say about these women? What exactly is he criticizing about them when he uses this kind of sarcasm?

c.  Re-read your answers to a and b. What is his opinion of these women?

2.  When Sarge arrives, Ian asks his permission to interview him for his school assignment and Sarge agrees.

a.  How long had Sarge been in the army? What had he done in the army?

b.  What did Sarge’s father tell him when Sarge enlisted in the army?

c.  When Sarge mentions the tragedy in Rwanda, and Ian does not know what he is talking about, how does Sarge react?

Chapter Ten:

1.  After Sarge’s reaction to Ian’s questions about Rwanda, Ian goes home and begins to research. Summarize his discoveries below:

a.  Rwanda’s geography: what does he learn where it is and who its neighbouring nations are? Is there ocean nearby? Is it big? How many people live there? (102) Why is Ian surprised by the size of the population?

b.  Rwanda’s economy: which facts does he learn about country’s economic condition? (103, in italics)

2.  Then, Ian began to look into the UN’s involvement in Rwanda:

a.  What was UNAMIR and why was it formed? (104)

b.  How many countries were involved in this UN mission? How many soldiers were involved in December of 1993? (106) How big was this force 5 months later? (106) Which Canadian was in command? ((106)

c.  What happened in April of 1994, and what did it lead to? (106)

d.  What had originally been the population of Rwanda? (107)

e.  By October 1994, how many people had died? (107)

f.  How many had been forced from their homes? (107)

g.  How many had left the country? (107)

3.  Define genocide. On Google, find 3 examples of genocide (besides Rwanda) that occurred in the 20th and 21st Centuries (1900-1999 and 2000 - now).

4.  In a FOLDER called “WAR IN RWANDA” collect 5 images that reveal the horrible truth about how people suffered in this war.
