A.Statement of major focus and objectives of the revised program.
The growth in international activity of domestic companies, large and small, as well as in the nonprofit and government sectors, has been enormous in the past two decades, and is accelerating. Right now we are doing an in-depth study of international initiatives of local companies and finding extensive and growing involvement, on the supply side, on the sales side, and in locating operations in other countries, of Winona area companies. Our Business students must have curriculum and program opportunities that prepare them for the fast-growing number of job and business opportunities this international involvement is opening up. This up-dated International Business Minor is an important step in achieving that objective. (A recent article of interest is “America Isn’t Ready” by G. Colvin, Fortune, July 25, 2005).
B.New Catalog Content
1.Provide a list of program content as it would appear in the catalog including required courses, electives, etc., by number and name. Include the number and name for each prerequisite, and all prerequisites of proposed prerequisites. All such prerequisites, and prerequisites of prerequisites, should be included in the total credit hour calculations for the revised program.

This International Business Minor provides in-depth coverage of issues, concepts, and practices related to the operations and management of international business. The program’s courses focus on the international business environment, and management of international/multinational operations and resources. Students are encouraged to study abroad for a semester or opt for a short travel-study aboard experience as a part of this Minor.

As can be seen by comparing the old with the new Minor, an objective is to have the students more well-rounded in international perspectives, not just in business but in history, culture, and communication, etc. In addition, since some of the required and elective classes also satisfy University Studies requirements, as well as the BUSA Major, students will not be burdened with additional semesters to complete the minor if they declare it and plan early.
In addition, in the OLD Minor, many of the required courses were offered only once per year, making it difficult for those declaring late or with less planning to complete it in a reasonable time. Though most of the same international business-related courses are involved, students will have more options, choices, and flexibility.

All International Business courses are the same as in the old Minorbut many now represent choices.
The Foreign Language requirement is also not new but only 6 S.H. will be required, not 9 S.H., giving students some background in the language of another culture but not expecting them to take so many additional credits. Two semesters will allow them skills for some basic conversation, and pronunciation, use numbers, read signs and order foods, etc.
Added courses (new to the Minor) are in Global Studies, Communication Studies, and History. All of these will offer students selecting this minor more breadth to help them understand and more readily appreciate another culture, relate better to people of another culture, and adapt more effectively to new surroundings. As more travel study opportunities and more study and work aboard opportunities are available at WSU, International Business Minors will be encouraged to take advantage of them. These first-hand experiences, if well designed and carried out, are some of the best learning and development experiences for international careers.
