THE BOSWELLS SCHOOL CPD PROGRAMME 2011/12

Rationale:To create a more varied and flexible internal CPD programme that allows staff (teaching & non-teaching) to access high quality professional development that suits their needs.

Timings:The sessions will run from October half-term onwards to enable teaching staff to link their professional development to the performance management cycle.

Credit System:All members of staff must collect at least 10 credits over the academic year, apart from NQTs, who will have some compulsory units and need to collect at least 10 credits on top of these.

There are 6 categories to the training:

Category A:Whole School Teaching & Learning

Category B:Whole School Skills-Based Training

Category C: Classroom-based Research Project

Category D:Membership of Teaching & Learning Based Communities (e.g. TLC, KWP)

Category E:Subject Specific Training

Category F: Work-Life Balance Activities

For Categories A, B and E:1 credit = each 1¼ hour session

2 credits = each 2¼ hour session

For Category C, adequate completion of research presentation is equivalent to 5 credits.

For Category D, membership of a community is equivalent to 2 credits.

For Category F, each activity is worth 1 credit (not each session).

For all full-time teaching staff, at least 6 credits must be made up from the provision in Categories A to D.

A maximum of 2 creditscan be gained through Category E.

A maximum of 2 credits can be gained through Category F.

Category E training is at the discretion of the HoSA and will need to be arranged with SMA in advance of

the programme being published.

  • The majority of the training will be led ‘by staff, for staff’. Workshops will be spread over the course of theyear.
  • Staff who have completed their credits in advance will not be expected to attend the training day onWednesday 13th June. The teaching and learning twilights will also be replaced by the newprogramme.
  • Staff who deliver workshops will receive one extra credit if there is significant planning involved. External training will be afforded to those staffwherenecessary.
  • Part-time staff are to complete INSET on a pro-rata basis (ie. 3 days working = 3 days Inset over the year). The choice of INSET needs to be made in agreement with their line manager.
  • All staff will be expected to complete evaluation forms for the training they attend.

Category A - Teaching & Learning Workshops

2011-2012

Please find below the teaching & learning workshops that staff may opt to attend this year. As usual, they will be workshop style sessions designed to promote good and outstanding teaching approaches. They aim to extend the current thinking of staff, encouraging them to implement some of the approaches within their practice. The sessions will be delivered by leading practitioners within our own staff. Sessions will last either1¼ hours (worth one credit) or 2¼ hours (worth 2 credits). Places are limited to 20 for each workshop.

Workshop Information
Kagan for beginners** (Tuesday 1st November, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): The introduction of Kagan Structures has had a major impact on teaching and learning at The Boswells School. Specifically for staff either new to the school, or who have not attended a Kagan workshop before, this session trials some of the most popular structures regularly used by our staff in the classroom. Compulsory for NQTs. Advisable for new staff. Delivered by Andrea Thorne & Cheryl Tyson.
Using Student Voice to enhance Teaching and Learning (Monday 14th November, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): This interactive session enables colleagues to explore how we can involve students in evaluating and moving forward our practice. These methods are suitable for use in any subject and will come with resources you can readily adapt for your teaching. Delivered by Brendan Godfrey.
Behaviour Management Strategies* (Thursday 17th November, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): This workshop gives staff a fresh look at techniques that can be implemented with very little preparation. With strategies appropriate to all key stages and all teaching styles, this session will benefit any good teacher, no matter how many years they have been in the role. Compulsory for NQTs. Delivered by Stephen Taylor and Anne Carpinteiro.
“Next Steps” AfL (Tuesday 22nd November, 3.30pm to 5.45pm): With assessment for learning the main teaching and learning focus for colleagues this year, this fun and interactive workshop takes an in depth approach to how we can embed good and outstanding practice in our daily teaching. Delivered by Tricia Farmer and Paul Williams.
Teaching Students with Autism (Thursday 1st December, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): This session will give an insight into autism and offer practical advice on teaching strategies that will allow autistic students to maximise their potential. Delivered by Cheryl King.
Challenging the Most Able (Thursday 19th January or Thursday 26th April, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): This workshop will give fun, practical approaches designed to challenge and motivate gifted and talented students. There will be an opportunity to learn about latest developments as well as share best practice. Delivered by Lyndsey Taylor.
College Teaching & Learning (Thursday 19th January or Thursday 26th April, 3.30pm to 4.45pm):This session will explore a range of teaching and learning techniques that can be used in your ‘A‘ Level teaching. Examples of successful techniques currently being used will be discussed and will incorporate the use of Kagan structures in an ‘A’ level lesson. This session is for experienced and new teachers in the College. Delivered by Ann Flanigan.
Delivering PSHCE (Tuesday 24th January, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): An opportunity for colleagues tolearn and share ideas that will enhance the teaching of PSHCE lessons. It gives staff a chance to discuss ideas before trialling them in lessons. Delivered by Helen Burton and Sue Mortby.
Designing and Managing your Classroom Space (Tuesday 24th January, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): This session looks at ways in which we can best use our classroom space to adapt to different teaching styles and maximise learning. It will give staff the confidence to take a risk that could make a big difference to the success of our students. Delivered by Debbie Beazeley.
Advanced Kagan (Thursday 2nd February, 3.30pm to 5.45pm): This workshop will introduce some new Kagan Structures as well as look at adaptations of some old ones. As in the past, these structures can be utilised with minimal preparation that will enable all students to engage in their learning. Time will be given to adapt and prepare activities ready for use in the classroom. Delivered by Andrea Thorne and Cheryl Tyson.
Creative Teaching Strategies (Thursday 15th March, 3.30pm to 5.45pm): This session will provide a variety of practical ideas for those of you willing to take a few risks.From quick, easy to implement activities to more thought provoking tasks, the workshop will enable staff to explore their creative side. Delivered by Debbie Beazeley and Tom Starmer.
Teaching Students with Learning Difficulties (Wednesday 25th April, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): With an increasing number of students entering the school with special educational needs, this session will look at best practice as well as give staff the opportunity to share strategies that have been successful in the classroom. Delivered by Cheryl King.
The Use of Wikis to enhance Teaching & Learning (Tuesday 1st May, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): With technology becoming ever more integral within teaching and learning, this session introduces staff to wikis and gives them the opportunity to learn how they can be a powerful and exciting resource in motivating our students to achieve. Delivered by Brendan Godfrey.

Category B - Skills-based Workshops

Listed below are the skills-based workshops that are accessible for staff this year. Once again, the sessions will be delivered by leading practitioners within our own staff. Sessions will last either1¼ hours (worth one credit) or 2¼ hours (worth 2 credits).

Workshop Information
Using Moodle (Thursday 10th November, 3.30pm to 5.45pm): This workshop will enable staff to learn more about our VLE and how it can be a powerful tool, both in and out of the classroom. Learn how to upload files and set up systems that will allow you to set interactive challenges for your students. Delivered by Mike Magowan.
Report Writing* (Tuesday 29th November, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): This workshop will focus on best practice when writing formal reports and give staff the opportunity to learn about the school’s reporting processes. Compulsory for NQTs. Delivered by Lesley Grover and John Parsons.
What makes a good form tutor?* (Thursday 12th January, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): For new and more experienced members of staff, this workshop will give colleagues to opportunity to share good practice as well as learn specific approaches that have been particularly successful. Compulsory for NQTs. Delivered by Darren Page.
Leadership: These workshops will give participants an exciting opportunity to develop an understanding of what makes an effective leader within a school. Specifically aimed at those looking to make the next step on to a Leadership Team, there are 4 components to the course:
Workshop 1: Professional Leadership Characteristics (Monday 16th January, 3.30pm to 4.45pm)
Workshop 2: Belbin Team Roles Analysis (Monday 30th January, 3.30pm to 4.45pm)
Workshop 3: Leadership Styles (Monday 20th February, 3.30pm to 4.45pm)
Workshop 4: Leading Change (Monday 5th March, 3.30pm to 4.45pm)
Workshops 1 to 3 are stand alone units, but those who wish to attend workshop 4 will need to attend all three previous sessions.
Please note: These sessions will be for a maximum of 12 participants. Priority will be given to those who intend to apply for Leadership posts in the near future.

Dealing with Parents* (Tuesday 24th January, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): Communicating with parents is an important skill for a teacher, but what would you do if a parent was being particularly difficult? This interactive workshop offers invaluable advice on how to effectively deal with parents. Compulsory for NQTs. Delivered by Joe Torpey.
SIMS Training (Thursday 2nd February, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): Another chance to learn about the power of SIMS! This workshop will be tailored to your own needs and ensure you are able to use SIMS more effectively for your role. For teaching and non-teaching staff. Delivered by Peter Webster.
The Use of Data to Raise Attainment (Thursday 22nd February, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): One of the most important tools we have at our disposal is the prior knowledge we have on the students we teach. This session looks at how data can be best used to raise the attainment of our students. Delivered by John Parsons.
Using Excel (Thursday 1st March, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): This workshop will give colleagues the chance to learn how to use Excel effectively. Whatever your level of competency, there will be an opportunity to learn new skills that can have a big impact no matter, whether you are a teaching or non-teaching member of staff. Delivered by Simon Groom.
Mentoring/Coaching a PGCE Student/NQT (Thursday 1st March, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): Whether you currently have the responsibility of supporting a PGCE student/NQT or are likely to have in the future, this session will focus upon best practice and give you the confidence to enable them to flourish! Delivered by Stephen Taylor and Grace Wilding.
Organising a School Trip (Thursday 15th March, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): Want to run a school trip but need advice on how to set it up? Preparing to lead a trip and want to pre-empt any pitfalls? This informative course will tell you all you need to know about running a school trip – with interesting anecdotes of mishaps to learn from! Delivered by Peter Webster.

Middle Management: These workshops will give participants an exciting opportunity to develop an understanding of what makes an effective middle manager within a school. Specifically aimed at those looking to make the next step into middle management, there are 4 components to the course:

Heartstart Training (to be arranged for the Spring Term, 3.30pm to 5.45pm): This session will teach you what do do in a life-threatening emergency. Learn skills such as how to deal with an unconscious patient, perform CPR or deal with serious bleeding. Delivered by Wayne Locker.
Attendance (to be arranged for the Summer Term, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): Delivered in conjunction with external agencies, this session will highlight how attendance can affect attainment. It will give an insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes both internally and externally to ensure our students get the best possible support. Delivered by Jane Oliver/Educational Welfare Officer.
Writing UCAS References (to be arranged for the Summer Term, 3.30pm to 4.45pm):Delivered in conjunction with external agencies, this session will focus on best practice when writing UCAS references for our students. It will highlight the key components that make up an excellent reference. Delivered by Sue Parratt/External Agency.
Finance Training/Budgeting (Tuesday 12th June, 3.30pm to 4.45pm): For current and aspiring budget holders, this session looks at the key components to manage a budget effectively. It will also give an insight into school finance and give participants the opportunity to share best practice. Delivered by Bruce Doy.

Category C - Classroom-based Research Project

2011-2012

A commitment to classroom-based research, which includes the production of a written presentation, will count as 5 credits.

Classroom-based Research Information
Classroom-based research: Following the success of TLA (The Teacher Learning Academy), this course gives you the opportunity to carry out research in your own classroom. It includes an introductory session that outlines the principles and framework for carrying out research then gives you regular access to coaching and mentoring throughout the process. You will be able to evaluate your current practice and look at small improvements that can be made. Write a short presentation and have it recognised at Boswells and perhaps even nationally! A time frame of one term will be given to complete the presentation. Delivered by Steve Mansell.

Category D - Teacher Learning Communities

2011-2012

Listed below are the ‘Teacher Learning Communities’ that are accessible for staff this year. Each ‘Community’ will run half-termly after school and membership is worth 2 credits.

Community Information
The Teacher Learning Community (TLC): The TLC has been successfully running for 5 years. These half-termly sessions will give members the opportunity to meet in a relaxed, informal atmosphere to trial and share teaching ideas that will motivate and enthuse both us and our students. Particular focus is paid to short, enjoyable activities that do not need significant planning and can be adapted to all subject areas. Led by Tricia Farmer.
The Kagan Working Party: Kagan has been a significant influence for colleagues at The Boswells School. As a member of the Working Party, you will learn more about how the structures, some new and some old favourites, can be implemented within your lessons. There will be an opportunity to trial different structures and feedback your experiences at the half-termly meetings. Led by Andrea Thorne and Cheryl Tyson.
The Creative Teaching Group: Following the huge success of the Creative Partnerships project, this group will focus on creative ideas that could have a major influence in the classroom. Whether it be developing your classroom into a creative space or using more creative mediums such as film, animation or wikis, these half-termly meetings will allow you to evaluate and develop your current practice. Led by Grace Wilding.
The VLE Focus Group:The school’s VLE is now accessible for students and staff. This group will meet on a half-termly basis to share best practice on how it can be used to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom. The group will also have a major input in determining how the VLE grows in the future. Led by Mike Magowan.
