a special invitation from emerging leaders

We would like to encourage ministry leaders to invite young people to consider attending, serving, and leading at Annual Conference this June 7-9 in Indianapolis. There are many opportunities for emerging leaders to share their gifts, grow in their understanding, and speak into meaningful conversations. If you know a young person who would be interested, please share with them the opportunity to be involved and support them in talking to church leadership or your district office to learn how they can participate.
"Not only will this make the event of Annual Conference better, but we truly believe that this will make our church better and really help our church grow for years into the future." -Molly Bickle, High School Student on the Emerging Leaders Team
The Emerging Leaders Team believes that young people are the church NOW and has made it a priority to have more young people leading and learning at Annual Conference. If you have questions do not hesitate to contact Emily Krach at .

volunteer marshals and pages sought for 2019 special session of the general conference

Nashville, Tenn.: Beginning April 4, 2018, volunteers will be able to apply online to serve as marshals or pages during the 2019 Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church. The denomination's top legislative assembly will meet February 23-26, 2019 in St Louis, Missouri, in the U.S.
Approximately 150 volunteers are needed to serve as marshals and pages during General Conference. Applicants must be able to serve all four days of the Special Session.
Marshals will be part of the team that will assist delegates, guests, and staff with seating, checking credentials, providing information, and other duties as assigned.
Pages will assist delegates, staff, bishops, members of the Judicial Council and official guests with communication and other needs. They distribute approved materials and deliver printed information. Pages should expect to do a great deal of walking.
Marshals and pages are responsible for their own travel and expenses. Those interested shouldsubmit an online application before the deadline of July 31. If you have additional questions, contact Dick Hooton at .
A separate process will be opened at a later date seeking marshals and pages for the 2020 General Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

2018 sermon contest open to laity

The Indiana Conference’s Lay Leadership Team offers an opportunity to express thanks and praise to God by asking laity to submit an original sermon manuscript for judging. This contest is open to all lay people in the Indiana Conference.
Following the theme of Indiana’s 2018 Annual Conference Session, the theme for this year’s manuscript contest is “See All The People,” based on Matthew 9:35-38.
The winning sermon manuscript will be presented during the Annual Conference’s Laity Session on Thursday, June 7. Manuscripts should be no more than 15 minutes in length. Entries will be judged based on creative and original development of the theme, but could be eliminated due to length.
Manuscripts need to be sent by email to or mailed to Anthony Swinger, 651 Masten St., Plainfield, IN 46168.
The manuscript must be accompanied by a cover sheet or letter that includes the writer’s name, address, phone number, email address, local church name and district. Entrants are asked not to include any personally identifying information in the manuscript itself since it will be assigned a number and judged anonymously.
All entries must be received no later than May 7. The winner will be notified by May 21.
NEW THIS YEAR: We will have an additional designated winner who is an emerging leader. If you are middle school, high school, or college age, please indicate “Emerging Leader” on the cover page of your submission.
For additional information about the contest, please contact Anthony Swinger, Central District Lay Servant Ministries Coordinator, at or 317-372-4991.

clergy ethics

It was determined in the Fall of 2014 that the Indiana Conference needed to take a deeper look at the former “clergy boundaries and diversity training” experience. Since that time, a focus group of diverse clergy was convened for conversations, and a task team was created, to begin dreaming about the new possibilities to satisfy this requirement.
We are excited to be in partnership with the Lewis Center for Church Leadership to provide Clergy Ethics online, with the course Maintaining Boundaries in a Digital Age. The cost for clergy is $25.00, and all clergyclassifications (associate members, elders, deacons, local pastors, supply, provisionals, and certified candidates) are required to complete the online clergy ethics course, by December 31, 2018. Additional information, along with login instructions can be found at this link: A list of those who have completed the course will be provided to districts on bi-annually.
Additional opportunities at Covenant Day and Life Together will be provided in late-2018 to enhance and expand the learning/expectations regarding clergy ethics.
