A RESOLUTION memorializing James L. Meagher.

WHEREAS, James L. Meagher was a longtime resident of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, living in Louisville; and

WHEREAS, James L. Meagher joined the United States Navy in the 1940s, where he engaged in combat in the Pacific Theater; and

WHEREAS, James L. Meagher began his professional career as a traveling salesman with the hardware manufacturer, Stratton & Terstegge, where he proved himself as being an industrious and effective employee, eventually becoming president of the corporation in 1961, and continuing to serve on the corporation's board after merger with C&H Capital Corporation until his retirement; and

WHEREAS, the energy that James L. Meagher exhibited in his occupation was evident in his service with the Bellarmine College's board of trustees where he was president from 1975 to 1977, and where he was a member of the Bellarmine College President's Society; evident in his service on the Spalding and Ursuline college boards; and evident through his successful efforts in fundraising for his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, where he also served as vice president of the Alumni Board; and

WHEREAS, James L. Meagher also contributed his manifold skills to his community, specifically to the Metro United Way Retirees Campaign, where he served as chair, and by being a founding member of the River Road Country Club as well as serving on the boards of the Louisville Trust and Liberty Bank for many years, including time after their merger; and

WHEREAS, despite the demands placed on him professionally and through his dedication to his community, James L. Meagher realized the value of family, taking great pride in his wife, Floy; his children, Mary-Glen Bradbury, Anne Northup, Virginia Meagher, Alice Lord, Jim Meagher, Jane Meagher, Katherine Hepler, Patty Clare, Maureen Orsini, Mary T. Plant, and Peggy Saylor; his sister, Margaret Phillips; his 31 grandchildren; and his great grand-child; and

WHEREAS, James L. Meagher was a devout man of God, and an active member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church; and

WHEREAS, James L. Meagher's daughter, Ann Meagher Northup, was a distinguished member of the House of Representatives of the Kentucky General Assembly from the late 1980s through the mid 1990s; and

WHEREAS, James L. Meagher passed away on January 29, 2005;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby express its most profound sense of sorrow at the loss of James L. Meagher to his family and to his friends, and furthermore affirms that James L. Meagher approached all he did in a professional manner, bringing his considerable talents and skills to many diverse groups, while never neglecting the family which he loved.

Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit 15 copies of this Resolution to Mrs. Floy Meagher, 4100 Ormond Road, Louisville, KY, 40207.
