A RESOLUTION honoring the University of Kentucky women's basketball team for its outstanding 2013-2014 season.

WHEREAS, the University of Kentucky women's basketball team has seen a resurgence under Coach Matthew Mitchell and his staff, becoming one of the winningest programs in women's college basketball during a tenure that has seen Mitchell win 144 games and appear in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments; and

WHEREAS, the Wildcats saw an unprecedented 30-6 season and an Elite Eight finish to the 2012-2013 season, and looked to capitalize on that momentum in the 2013-2014 campaign; and

WHEREAS, the early season was punctuated by one of the most exciting wins in program history, as the Wildcats defeated number-nine-ranked Baylor University 133-130 in four overtimes in Arlington, Texas, improving the team to an unblemished 9-0 record; and

WHEREAS, after a midseason that saw uneven play, the Wildcats regained their confidence as they entered a game against the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville on February 16, 2014; and

WHEREAS, the Wildcats defeated the Lady Vols 75-71, the first victory in Knoxville for the Wildcats since 1985; and

WHEREAS, the Wildcats would win five of their last six games before the NCAA Tournament, and would enter that event as a 3 seed. Playing their games in South Bend, Indiana, the Wildcats would defeat Wright State and Syracuse, before falling to Baylor, 90-72; and

WHEREAS, the Wildcats, who finished the season with 26 wins against only 9 losses, will return their leading scorer, Jennifer O'Neill, who averaged 13 points and two assists a game, as well as guard Bria Goss and the talented freshmen duo of Linnae Harper and former Marion County standout Makayla Epps, the daughter of Wildcat men's great Anthony Epps; and

WHEREAS, this honorable body hereby commends Coach Matthew Mitchell and the University of Kentucky women's basketball team for all they accomplished during the 2013-2014 season, wishes the senior class the best of luck as they finish their extraordinary careers, and once again applauds the job that Coach Mitchell and his staff do as they lead this program to heights it has never before seen;
