A RESOLUTION honoring the truck drivers of this Commonwealth and our great nation.

WHEREAS, the trucking industry serves as the most vital piece of infrastructure to our nation's economy, employing nine million individuals, transporting over six billion tons of freight annually, and accounting for billions of dollars in annual revenue; and

WHEREAS, the trucking industry pays a large share of the upkeep expenses on our nation's highways, paying over twenty billion dollars annually in state and federal highway user taxes; and

WHEREAS, the total distance driven by commercial trucks in this country exceeds 150 billion miles per year; and

WHEREAS, the public face of the American trucking industry are its three million drivers, one million of which work as over the road truckers; and

WHEREAS, it is these drivers, these "knights of the highway" who make sure that every consumer product imaginable, from cars to appliances to fuel to food, reaches its final destination; and

WHEREAS, it is often a hard road traveled by these men and women, who, while not being paid a king's ransom, endure a life which often finds them gone from home for long stretches of time, far from the warmth and security of their families and homes; and

WHEREAS, truckers are deeply concerned about safety on our nation's highways and have, as a group, an outstanding record of relatively few accidents for the incredible number of miles driven in all manner of conditions; and

WHEREAS, we should never forget the importance of truckers or the work they do, which is summarized by a simple phrase : "If you've got it, a trucker brought it."; and and

WHEREAS, our Commonwealth and nation owe a debt of gratitude to these hard working men and women for the part they play in keeping the economy of this country running smoothly and keeping all of us supplied with the goods we depend on every day; and

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:
