A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Wayne Shumate.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Wayne Shumate and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was born on November 13, 1934, a native son of the Commonwealth and a longtime resident of Paris, Kentucky, and traversed these earthly bounds on November 14, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was a proud Kentucky entrepreneur who brought many jobs to central Kentucky and he was regarded by many as a mentor, coach, and a leader by example who had a brilliant mind and a strong work ethic; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate began working at the age of 16 for his parents at Griffin Manufacturing Company, the underwear manufacturing business they helped start in 1952; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate quickly worked his way up the ladder at Griffin and became president of the company in 1964 when the name changed to Blue Grass Industries; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate expanded the operation of Blue Grass Industries to include six plants and he was named chairman of the board; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was also affiliated with Jockey International, where he served many posts, including: director, vice president of manufacturing and operations, and chairman of the executive committee; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate sold his interest in Blue Grass Industries in 1981 to Jockey International and then purchased a Paris sewing plant from Jockey and created Kentucky Textiles, Incorporated, where he served as board chairman, and the company manufactured Speedo swimwear, including the line of Olympic swimwear worn by American teams all over the world; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate also allowed his entrepreneurial spirit to take him into the farm fields of Kentucky by seeking to find a profitable replacement crop for Kentucky's struggling tobacco industry, for which his answer was blackberries; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate's WindStone Farm in Nicholas County now raises over 102 acres of blackberries, it had profits in 2003 of 400,000 dollars, and its blackberry jam is nationally recognized within the industry; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate served on many civic and non-profit boards over the years including: the Kentucky Harness Racing Commission, the Association of Racing Commissioners International, the Cincinnati/Cleveland 4th District Federal Reserve, Governor Carroll's Economic Development Commission, and Four Tigers, LLC; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was a proud Mason, a member of the Oleika Shrine Temple, and a member of the First Christian Church in Carlisle, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was a member of the Paris High School Greyhound Hall of Fame, a University of Kentucky Fellow, a member of the UK advisory board for Robotics and Manufacturing Systems, and a member of the board of trustees of the Lexington Theological Seminary; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was the devoted and loving husband of Kay George Shumate; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was the beloved father of Clifford Wayne Shumate, Jr. and Sara Paige Shumate Short; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was the loving son of his mother, Carrie Spivey Shumate and he was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Theodore Shumate; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Shumate was the proud and loving grandfather of Bryan Shumate Short and Kaylyn Bailey Shumate; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Wayne Shumate has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Wayne Shumate and extends to his family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. The Senate recognizes that Wayne Shumate made great contributions to the business industry in this Commonwealth and the members especially thank him for his innovate contribution to the blackberry industry.

Section 3. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Wayne Shumate.
