A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Larry M. Greathouse.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to the late Larry M. Greathouse, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Larry M. Greathouse was born October 12, 1941, in Owensboro, Kentucky, the son of William McCoy and Eloise Millay Greathouse, and departed this life February 12, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Greathouse is survived by his loving wife, Jina Johnson Greathouse; two daughters, Kate Greathouse and Megan Greathouse; two sons, Joe Greathouse of Lexington and John Greathouse of Berea; two brothers; and two grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Larry M. Greathouse, a descendant of an early Kentucky family that settled in Hancock County during the mid-1800s, received a degree in history from Berea College in 1963, and while attending Berea College, he was president of the Berea College Student Association, held the 100-year low hurdle record, and was a member of the Berea College basketball team; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Greathouse received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1969, and thereafter opened a law practice in Berea, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Larry M. Greathouse began his long and distinguished career in public service to the Commonwealth during the 1960s as a consultant for the President's Task Force on the War Against Poverty, as a volunteer for the Council of Southern Mountains, Inc. in Berea, and as an administrative analyst for the Kentucky Office of Economic Opportunity; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Greathouse served as chief legal officer to Governor Wendell Ford from 1971 to 1974, and later served as treasurer of several of Ford's successful U.S. Senate campaigns, returning to private law practice in Richmond and Frankfort from 1975 to 1979; and

WHEREAS, Larry M. Greathouse served as a member of the Governor's Task Force on Welfare Reform from 1977 to 1979, and during the 1980s, played an integral role as a facilitator in difficult negotiations surrounding the storage of nerve gas at the Lexington-Bluegrass Army Depot and a plan to build an incinerator at the depot to destroy the nerve gas; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Greathouse unsuccessfully sought election to the office of Attorney General in 1983, but continued his public service when appointed by Governor Wallace Wilkinson to the state Workers' Compensation Board, on which he served until 2000; and

WHEREAS, Larry M. Greathouse was named deputy secretary of the Kentucky Justice Cabinet in August, 2000, and commissioner of the Department of Workers' Claims in March, 2002, a post in which he served until June, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Larry M. Greathouse leaves a legacy of commitment to public service that will long stand as an example of the highest standards of integrity and professionalism to all who aspire to earn the title, "Public Servant";

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its deep sense of sorrow upon the passing of Larry M. Greathouse, and extends to his family and multitude of friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Larry M. Greathouse.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Jina Johnson Greathouse, 324 Ewing Street, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601-2644.
