A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
WHEREAS, March 12, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA, founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia; and
WHEREAS, throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouting has inspired millions of girls and women with the highest ideals of courage, confidence, and character; and
WHEREAS, through the Girl Scout leadership experience, girls develop the skills and lessons that will serve them a lifetime so that they may contribute to their communities; and
WHEREAS, Girl Scouting takes an active role in increasing girls’ awareness of the opportunities available to them today in math, science, technology, healthy living, and other fields that can expand their horizons and strengthen the Commonwealth of Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road, the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, and numerous other scouting programs and councils are celebrating Girl Scouts of the USA's 100th anniversary by proclaiming 2012 as the "Year of the Girl"; and
WHEREAS, Troop 1920 – named for the year that women received the right to vote – is a bipartisan delegation of women members of the Kentucky General Assembly, established by the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road and the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. These Legislators from Troop 1920 continue to educate our great state’s legislative body about issues affecting girls and young women; and
WHEREAS, there are more than 400 community partners that make Girl Scouts available for more than 22,000 girl and adult members throughout Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, more than 3 million current Girl Scout members nationwide will be celebrating 100 years of this American tradition, with nearly 50 million women who are former Girl Scouts, all of whom demonstrating the impact of this amazing movement;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:
Section 1. The House of Representatives is honored to recognize the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA and proudly proclaims the week of March, 12, 2012, as Girl Scouts Week. The House of Representatives also applauds the commitment the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road and the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana make to support the leadership development of America’s girls.
Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Kentucky’s Wilderness Road Council, 2277 Executive Dr., Lexington, KY 40505, and the Kentuckiana Council, P.O. Box 32335, Louisville, Kentucky 40232-2335.
