From the Editor’s Desk:

Human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.

- William James

I write this article with the knowledge that I will be at Westwind shortly after you all read it. I look forward to the warmth of Florida and of course of our Community.

I would like to try to include a piece each month on something different that we may enjoy in our lives and want to share with other people in the community. As a lot of you know I do yoga and it has become a very big part of not only my exercise routine but more importantly a way of life.

After trying several different venues for yoga and still not satisfied I starting surfing the net to find a venue that might suit my needs. A very lucky day when I found the following website:

http://www.crystalbeachyoga.com/Beach_Yoga.html

Lisa Roe is a certified yoga instructor who teaches yoga and meditation in Live Oak Park. “Crystal Beach, Florida is a small and relatively unknown hidden treasure right in Palm Harbor and Pinellas County. Located to the north of Dunedin and the south of Tarpon Springs, this small gulf front community houses Live Oak Park right on the Gulf of Mexico. The name Live Oak Park is well deserved by the gracefully reaching 100 year old oak trees that spread their winding limbs throughout the park. This canopy of oaks and the Gulf of Mexico provide the serene backdrop for Crystal Beach Yoga and Meditation.”

Myself and several other members of our community attend Lisa’s yoga classes a couple times a week. Easy to get to by bike or car. Everyone welcome, every level of participant whether you have just started or been taking yoga for years will enjoy Lisa’s classes. Just bring a matt or a blanket and suffer through an hour of beautiful scenery, wonderful people while still getting fit, both body and mind.

Please contact me or Lisa if you would like to participate in a class. Lisa’s number is 813-781-4881.

I have added the usual activities to the calendar but to confirm when they start unless stated in the Hi Lites please contact the person in charge or Elaine Blank.

President’s Report by Elaine Blank

SOCIAL CLUB NEWS from Elaine Blank, President

As I sit here tonight writing this article I can hear the rain pouring down once again. The weather man said that we have had 56 inches of rain so far this year in Clearwater. It may be more than that here at Westwind. The Snowbirds are beginning to migrate back to the Park. It is so good to see everyone and get those big hugs!!! We had our first “official” Social Club Meeting of the 2012/2013 season on October 2nd. The calendar of events for the season was posted and we talked about the election of officers coming up at our December meeting. It would be very good if we had at least two people run for each office. As of this date the nominating committee has one candidate for each office and several who are running for Trustees. Please talk to your friends and see if we can’t come up with some more candidates so that we have a genuine election or choice. This does not have to be a female slate. We would be so happy to have some male participation on the board.

It has been brought to our attention that our bag lunch and movie event was actually illegal. According to the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC) you are required to have a license in order to show movies to a group. The license costs $2,300 per year. The fines start at $750 and can climb to $150,000.

Needless to say, our bag lunch and movie afternoons have been cancelled.

Lynn McKnight from National Cremation Society will speak at the November Social Club meeting. It should prove to be a very informative meeting. Janet Hattan, our Vice-president will be conducting that meeting as Tom and I will be joining a few other residents on the Princess Cruise leaving on November 1st.

Both Westwind I and Westwind II have decided to use the white bags for the luminaries at Christmas this year. Please do not save the milk jugs, you can recycle them at the recycle center on Curlew across from Curlew Cemetery.

Thank you to the Craft and gossip girls for creating the beautiful new centerpieces for the tables in the Club House. It looks like fall with the pumpkin pictures hanging on the wall (thank you Hank Dircks) and the new fall centerpieces.

Don’t forget to clean out your closets and sheds and give your castoffs to the committee at the Club House on November 8th for the Windfall Sale. This is our biggest money making project of the year so we need everyone to support the Sale. The sale will be on Saturday, November 10th. The committee can use all the help they can get on Thursday, November 8th to bring in everything from storage to the Club House and set up the sale. It is a lot of work but it is fun too. There is always a lot of camaraderie among the workers (and usually pizza when you are finished).

Our calendar is buzzing with fun things to do this season so please mark your calendars and plan to have a good time and participate. Anne Scott does a great job of keeping the center page calendar up to date each month. Safe travels to all those traveling back to Westwind this month. Can’t wait to see you!!!!

PARK REGISTRY

We have two people who have volunteered to be the “go to” men for VERY MINOR Problems in the home as in changing refrigerator filters, furnace filter, and light bulbs. Etc. It has been discussed that some residents due to physical infirmities cannot do these minor maintenance items themselves yet the job is not big enough to contract with a repair person. Doug Hattan #285 and Harlow #182 have agreed to lend a hand. The other three members of the registry as listed in last month’s Hi-Lites are Marietta Chapman #485 for language translation, Dennis Logsden #152 for CD, DVD and any other music format, and Jim Keller #150 for computer issues. Thank you to all of the above for your willingness to be a good neighbor to those of us who have frustration with these types of issues. I am still looking for someone to serve as a consultant for air conditioning replacement. These folks have truly demonstrated what being a part of the Westwind Family is really about.
