SUMMER READING LIST

The purpose of summer reading is to sustain the powers of the imagination and to explore worlds of characters, settings, plots, and ideas we can only visit through literature. The summer reading list contains both classic and contemporary authors. These books are available from your local library or bookstore.

During the first week of school, your English teacher will evaluate your reading through an assessment such as, but not limited to, a template test, critical or creative essay, reading journal, project, presentation, or test. Although video versions are enjoyable, they may differ greatly from the written word; rely on the works themselves. You are required to read both titles listed below.

Be advised some books may contain somewhat explicit language, sexual references, or mature subject matter. If there are any questions, contact Marybeth Dial at

Read each of the following books:

1)Raisin in the Sun (1959)–Lorraine Hansberry – Ever since winning the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Hansberry’s play has been a staple of American drama, documenting the changing times through that of a Chicago’s family struggle to better themselves. Addressing issues of identity, justice, race, generational differences, and moral responsibility, this play has been described as “a play rooted in its own time that speaks through the years to our own” – Chicago Tribune

2)Clybourne Park (2010)– Bruce Norris – This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play has been characterized as a spin-off of Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. Set also in the city of Chicago, Norris’ drama spans two generations (set in the years 1959 and 2009) and depicts the changing times through two couple’s experiences in home ownership. Building off the same ideas and themes of Hansberry’s work, this will serve to give students a relevant, updated look at how times have changed since Hansberry’s landmark work.

3)How to Read Literature Like a ProfessorRevised Edition – Thomas Foster – This easy to read guide to getting the most out of the reading experience prepares students for the in-depth analysis of texts to be conducted in AP Literature. The author includes many text-based examples as well as clear, thorough explanations on how to conduct close readings on literary texts. Rationale: Foster’s book provides a foundation of close reading and interpretive strategies that will be used and built upon throughout the course.
